SBI PREVIOUS YEAR PAPER:-
ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Directions (1-5) : Rearrange the given six sentences/group of
sentences (A), (B), (C), (D), (E) and (F) in a proper sequence, so
as to form a meaningful paragraph and then answer the given
questions. A. Apart from these, the care provided in these
facilities is also not up to the mark. B. For instance, in 2015,
there was one government hospital bed for every 1,833 people
compared with 2,336 persons in decade earlier which is a good
sign. C. India has made strides in the expansion of public
services. D. For example, six out of every ten hospitals in the
less developed States did not provide intensive care and a
quarter of them struggled with issues like sanitation and
drainage. E. For instance, there is one government hospital bed
for every 614 people in Goa compared with one every 8,789
people in Bihar. F. However, as Lancet points out, this
availability of beds has been inequitably distributed within the
country.

Directions (6-15) : Read the following passage carefully and
answer the questions. Certain words/phrases are given in bold to
help you locate them while answering some of the questions.
Most of the declarations of the Fourth World Conference on
Women in Beijing in 1995 have faded from memory. But the
linkage made there between women’s rights and poverty and the
assumption that discrimination actually impedes progress-has
survived. Since then the promotion of equal rights has become a
central economic priority for international aid aeencies. The
World Bank has declared the enfranchisement of women. the
single most important issue for effective development. A
sweeping statement, perhaps, but since 1805 the bank has lent
billions of dollars on programmes that encourage, girls’
education, better maternal health and on micro-credit initiatives
that funnel money directly into the hands of women. This is a
substantial sum dedicated to women. If not, most developing
countries, women produce more food than men
and bear primary responsibility for feeding, sheltering and
educating the young. But lack of education coupled with social
customs which treat women as secondclass citizens restrict their
participation in the economy. The figures are starting. Globally
Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 19
those women who do work are concentrated at the bottom end of
the labour market and receive far less pay. A significant
proportion of the world’s illiterate are women and women
account for half of all refugees. Anything that helps women
catch up with men should be welcomed on grounds of equity
alone. But fairer treatment of women is also one of the most
effective ways to improve an economy’s efficiency as well. It is
widely recognised educating more women in developing
countries and specifically making education available to men
and women equally is likely to raise the productive potential of
an economy significantly. As education levels rise, so do
household incomes. In Sub-Saharan Africa, for instance, 70% of
young children whose mothers have secondary information
receive their vaccinations, as opposed to just 30% of those
whose mothers have no formal schooling at all. A cross-country
analysis concluded that gains in women’s education made the
single largest contribution to declines in malnutrition in 13
countries between 1970 and 1995. Some researchers reckon that,
if female farmers in places like Cameron or Kenya were
afforded the same schooling and other opportunities as male
farmers, crop yields would rise quite hefty. One economic
analysis estimates that, if countries in South Asia, Africa and the
Middle East had closed the gender gap in schooling at the same
rate as East Asia after 1960. Income per head could have grown
substantially over the actual growth rates achieved. But one
country’s gender bias is another’s ancient tradition, entrenched
in laws and institutions. Some South American Countries, like
Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 20
Bolivia and Guatemala restrict wives employment outside the
home in South African nations like Botswana, women have no
independent right to manage of own land but now girls are
offered stipends for secondary education- a long standing
programme now holstered by multilateral aid. Elsewhere in
Africa in Ghana, peripatetic bankers act as lenders and financial
advisors, often helping women as particular to set up small
businesses. Part of the rationale for micro-finance (small icons)
that caters to women is that some studies have shown women
tend to spend money more prudently on vital goods and services
that benefit families, men often squander it. This finding may
seem implausible to many men. Not many women would be
surprised.

Poverty measurement is an unsettled issue, both conceptually
and methodologically. Since poverty is a process as well as an
Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 71
outcome; many come out of it while others may be falling into
it. The net effect of these two parallel processes is a proportion
commonly identified as the 'head count ratio', but these ratios
hide the fundamental dynamism that characterises poverty in
practice. The most recent poverty reestimates by an expert group
has also missed the 'crucial dynamism'. In a study conducted on
13,000 households which represented the entire country in 1993-
94 and again on 2004-05. It was found that in the ten-year
period 18.2% rural population moved out of poverty whereas
another 22.1% fell into it over this period. This net increase of
about four percentage points was seen to have a considerable
variation across states and regions.

poverty effectively and accurately.

Google has had many logos since its renaming from Backrub.
The first logo was created by Sergey Brin using GIMP, but the
current official Google logo was designed by Ruth Kedar, and is
a word mark based on the Catull typeface, an old style serif
typeface designed by Gustav Jaeger for the Berthold Type

Core business:-
Google is an American multinational technology company
specializing in Internet-related services and products. These
include online advertising technologies, search, cloud
computing, and software. Most of its profits are derived from Ad
Words, an online advertising service that places advertising near
the list of search results. Google was founded by Larry Page and
Sergey Brin while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford
University. Together they own about 14 percent of its shares but
control 56 percent of the stockholder voting power through
super voting stock. They incorporated Google as a privately held
company on September 4, 1998. An initial public offering
followed on August 19, 2004. Its mission statement from the
outset was "to organize the world's information and make it
universally accessible and useful," and its unofficial slogan was
"Don't be evil."In 2004, Google moved to its new headquarters
in Mountain View, California, nicknamed the Googolplex.
Rapid growth since incorporation has triggered a chain of
products, acquisitions and partnerships beyond Google's core
search engine. It offers online productivity software including
email (Gmail), a cloud storage service (Google Drive), an office
suite (Google Docs) and a social networking service (Google+).
Desktop products include applications for web browsing,
organizing and editing photos, and instant messaging. The

Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 163

company leads the development of the Android mobile
operating system and the browser-only Chrome OS [15] for a
netbook known as a Chrome book. Google has moved
increasingly into communications hardware: it partners with
major electronics manufacturers in the production of its "high-
quality low-cost" Nexus devices and acquired Motorola
Mobility in May 2012. In 2012, a fiber-optic infrastructure was
installed in Kansas City to facilitate a Google Fiber broadband
service.
Google’s Corporate Mission Statement:-

Google’s corporate mission is “to organize the world’s

information and make it universally accessible and useful.”
Ever since its beginnings, the company has focused on
developing its proprietary algorithms to maximize effectiveness
in organizing online information. Google continues to focus on
ensuring people’s access to the information they need. The
company’s mission statement adheres to a utilitarian benefit that
the business provides to its users. In this regard, the following
are the primary elements of Google’s corporate mission:

1. World’s information
2. Organization
3. Universal accessibility
4. Usefulness

Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 164

information in one click.” The company’s nature of business is
a direct manifestation of this vision statement. For example,
Google’s most popular product is its search engine service. This
product enables people to easily access information from around
the world. The company applies its vision together with the
mission statement to maintain dominance as an Internet
technology, software, and hardware business. The following are
the primary elements of the company’s corporate vision:

1. World’s information

HR policy:-
Google revealed a new HR policy in an attempt to improve the
way employees communicated with each other and avoid
incidences of workplace harassment.
The policy aims to uphold its open culture of communication
while enforcing the need to be respectful. It comes on the back
of a rise in complaints about harassment and trolling taking

Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 166

place on internal communication platforms, such as interest-
based mailing lists and other messaging avenues.
In an internal survey, Google employees said that the level of
respect in company-wide discussions had declined and that
incivility on internal communication platforms was on the rise.
“The increase in complaints isn’t surprising. We’re talking about
difficult things,” Google said in the newly-unveiled guidelines.
“Googlers are using Groups to sometimes discuss deeply
personal issues. And it’s hard to do so constructively in online
forums as our community grows larger across the globe, often
contributing to a feeling of impersonal rather than familiar, trust-
based interactions.”
Last year, former engineer James Damore had caused outrage
after posting a sexist, anti-diversity essay on one of the mailing
lists suggesting that women were genetically unsuited for tech
jobs. He was subsequently fired due to a violation of employee
code of conduct.
The new policy aims to avoid a recurrence of such controversial
posts by first giving employees who administer the mailing lists
the right to moderate the conversation taking place. Eventually
Google will provide moderation tools for the platform.
The guidelines also urge employees to keep an open mind to
different views and avoid making blanket statements, reported
Gizmodo.
“Trolling, name calling and ad hominem attacks will not be
tolerated,” the guidelines state. “It can help to be curious about –
Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 167
and acknowledge – the emotions that come up during a tough
conversation... The goal should be to understand more, not to be
right.”
Besides enforcing good interpersonal communication among
employees, the new policy also clarifies what constitutes as
harassment and provides a transparent view of how HR
investigates complaints and resolves problems. Employees are
also outlined their rights to discuss working conditions.

CSR activities:-
Starting from 2015, Google issues environmental report that
contains the details of Google CSR programs and initiatives.
The following are the most noteworthy parts of Google
performance in important fronts of CSR taken from Google
Environmental Report 2016 and other sources.

typical data centre
 Google purchases or produces 24% of renewable energy and
the company has 11% renewable electricity already on the grid,
thus total use of renewable energy accounts to 35%. The use of
remaining 65% energy which is non-renewable is neutralized
by carbon offset projects.
 In Mountain View campus 1.9 MW solar panels generate more
than 3 million kWh clean energy

Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 168

 Google has made an agreement to invest more than USD1.5
billion in renewable energy projects such as large-scale wind
and rooftop solar panels.
 More than 4 million square feet of Google buildings have
achieved green certification status by LEED.

invest USD2.5 billion in solar and wind projects[1]
 The average annual power usage effectiveness (PUE) for
Google’s global fleet of data centres was 1.12 in 2015,
compared with the industry average of 1.7
 To date, 854,000 square meters (9.2 million square feet) of
Google office facilities have achieved Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

Water Consumption by Google

 Google data centre in Berkeley County, South Carolina alone
uses about 4 million gallons of surface water per day[2]
 From 2013 to 2015, the internet giant reduced potable litres of
water used per employee by 30% at its Bay Area headquarters
 In total, six of Google’s operating data centres have achieved
100% landfill diversion, and one of these has reached Zero
Waste to Landfill
 The company has set regional water reduction targets for its
offices in 2017

Waste Reduction and Recycling by Google

 In 2015, Google has diverted 84% of waste from its global data
centre operations away from landfills, and so far in 2016, it has
diverted 86%.
 In 2015, 19% of the servers Google deployed were
remanufactured machines
Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 169
 In 2015, 52% of the components Google used for machine
upgrades in company data centres were refurbished inventory

Carbon Emissions by Google

 The company has been carbon neutral since 2007
 Google’s ‘Commuting Sustainably’ program keeps 5,700 cars
out of the road and company shuttle program and electric
vehicle charging stations is equivalent to more than 87 million
vehicle miles annually.
 Google is increasing the range of its operations in cloud, a
platform that is carbon neutral with positive environmental
implications
 From 2009 to 2015, the company’s carbon intensity per revenue
(metric tones’ Scope 1 and 2 CO2e/million USUSD) and per
full-time equivalent employee both decreased by more than
50%.

Sample verbal questions:-

DIRECTIONS for the question 1 to 4: Study the passages below
carefully and answer the questions that follow passage

The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Goa has

developed a real-time reporting and Internet-accessible coastal
sea-level monitoring system and it has been operational at
Verem jetty in the Mandovi estuary in Goa since September 24,
2005. The gauge uses a cellular modem to put on the Internet
real-time sea-level data, which can be accessed by authorized
personnel. By using a cellular phone network, coastal sea-level
changes are continuously updated on to a web-server. The sea-

Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 178

level gauge web site can be made available to television
channels to broadcast real-time visualization of the coastal sea
level, particularly during oceanogenic hazards such as storm
surges or a tsunami. A network of such gauges along the coast
and the islands that lie on either side of the mainland would
provide data to disaster management agencies to disseminate
warnings to coastal communities and beach tourism centres.

The gauge incorporates a bottom pressure transducer as the

sensing element. The sea unit of the gauge, which houses the
pressure transducer, is mounted within a cylindrical protective
housing, which in turn is rigidly held within a mechanical
structure. This structure is secured to a jetty. The gauge is
powered by a battery, which is charged by solar panels. Battery,
electronics, solar panels, and cellular modems are mounted on
the top portion of this structure. The pressure sensor and the
logger are continuously powered on, and their electrical current
consumption is 30 mA and 15 mA respectively. The cellular
modem consumes 15 mA and 250 mA during standby and data
transmission modes, respectively. The pressure sensor located
below the low-tide level measures the hydrostatic pressure of the
overlying water layer. An indigenously designed and developed
microprocessor based data logger interrogates the pressure
transducer and acquires the pressure data at the rate of two
samples a second. The acquired pressure data is averaged over
an interval of five minutes to remove high-frequency wind-
waves that are superimposed on the lower frequency tidal cycle.
The averaged data is recorded in a multimedia card. The
measured water pressure is converted to water level using sea
water density and acceleration owing to the earth's gravity. The
Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 179
water level so estimated is then referenced to chart datum (CD),
which is the internationally accepted reference level below
which the sea level will not fall. The data received at the Internet
server is presented in graphical format together with the
predicted sea level and the residual. The residual sea level (that
is, the measured minus the predicted sea level) provides a clear
indication of sea-level oscillation and a quantitative estimate of
the anomalous behaviour, the driving force for which could be
atmospheric forcing (storm) or geophysical (tsunami).
A network of sea-level gauges along the Indian coastline and
islands would also provide useful information to mariners for
safe navigation in shallow coastal waters and contribute to
various engineering projects associated with coastal zone
management, besides dredging operations, port operations and
management of inland water resources (reservoirs, dams). The
system can also be used effectively for sharing of water
resources between States and neighbouring countries, and for
monitoring and implementation of river water treaties with
greater transparency. Among the various communication
technologies used for real-time transmission of sea-level data are
the wired telephone connections, VHF/UHF transceivers,
satellite transmit terminals and cellular connectivity. Wired
telephone connections are severely susceptible to loss of
connectivity during natural disasters such as storm surges,
primarily because of telephone line breakage. Communication
via VHF/UHF transceivers is limited by line-of-sight distance
between transceivers and normally offer only point-to-point data
transfer. Satellite communication via platform transmit terminals
(PTTs) has wide coverage and, therefore, allows data reception
from offshore platforms. However, data transfer speeds are
limited. Further, many satellites (for example, GOES, INSAT)
Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 180
permit data transfer only at predefined time-slots, thereby
inhibiting continuous data access. Technologies of data
reporting via satellites have undergone a sea change recently in
terms of frequency of reportage, data size, recurring costs and so
forth. Broadband technology has been identified as one that can
be used optimally for real-time reporting of data because of its
inherent advantages such as a continuous two-way connection
that allows high-speed data transfer and near real-time data
reporting. While satellite communication is expensive, wireless
communication infrastructure and the ubiquity of cellular
phones have made cellular communication affordable. Low
initial and recurring costs are an important advantage of cellular
communication. A simple and cost-effective methodology for
real-time reporting of data is the cellular-based GPRS
technology, which has been recently implemented at the NIO for
real-time reporting of coastal sea level data.

Core business:-

Tata Consultancy Services Limited (TCS) is an Indian

multinational information technology
(IT) service, consulting and business solutions company
headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

So three primary areas of focus:

1. Service: They provide service to varied clients for solving

their business needs. TCS employees are outsourced for
that work i.e., they are required to support & help their
clients in solving their problems.
You can treat this in similar lines to “A mechanic solving

Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 190

every car model’s problems”. There the mechanic is
outsourced by his/her boss to the clients (car owners).
Mechanic might be required to go to client location
(onsite) or do the work from garage (off-shore) only.
2. Consulting: It is the business model wherein TCS is being
contacted (consulted) by clients to engage in the business
of giving expert advice to them so that they can grow
either themselves or use option #1.
You can relate that to the work of Financial Advisors
(consultants)..Whom we (clients) contact to understand
how & where to invest our money.
3. Business Solutions: It is a combination of ideas used to
help a company achieve its objectives. A business
solution comes in terms of marketing, payroll, auditing,
accounting market research and analysis, among other
essential business activities.
You can relate that to Superman:-D
In plain English, TCS outsources their employees to solve the
client needs which can be varied in nature.

DIRECTIONS for questions 6 to 10: Read the passage and
answer the question based on it.
"Many people who are looking to get a pet dog get a puppy.
There are many reasons why people get puppies. After all,
puppies are cute, friendly, and playful. But even though puppies
make good pets, there are good reason why you should consider
getting an adult dog instead. When you get a puppy, you have to
teach it how to behave. You have to make sure that the puppy is
housebroken so that it does not got to the bathroom inside the
house. You have to teach the puppy not to jump up on your
guests or chew on your shoes. You have to train the puppy to
walk on a leash. This is a lot of work. On the other hand, when
you get an adult dog, there is a good chance that it will already
know how to do all of the previously mentioned things. Many
adult dogs have already been housebroken. Many adult dogs will
not jump on or chew things that you do not want them to jump
on or chew. Many adult dogs will be able to walk on a leash
without pulling you to the other side of the street. Puppies also
have a lot of energy and want to play all of the time. This can be
fund, but you might not want to play as much as your puppy
does. Puppies will not always sleep through the night or let you
relax as you watch television. On the other hand, most adult
dogs will wait on you to play. What is more, they will sleep
when you are sleeping and are happy to watch television on the
couch right beside you. There is one last reason why you should
get an adult dog instead of a puppy. When most people go to the
pound to get a dog, they get a puppy. This means that many
adult dogs spend a lot of time in the pound, and some never find
Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 202
good homes. So if you are looking to get a dog for a pet, you
should think about getting an adult dog. They are good pets who
need good homes.

CSR activities :-
Microsoft released 2017 Corporate Responsibility Report.
These reports reflect our commitment that delivering on our
mission extends well beyond our products and services. It
includes a deep commitment to operate our business, deployour
resources, and focus our corporate philanthropy in a way that
has a positive impact on the broader community. This
commitment guides the way we innovate in new areas such as
AI, how we develop and use technology to help solve real-world
problems, and most importantly, how we work to serve people
and communities across the globe.
In his letter to shareholders, customers, partners and employees
this year, our CEO, Satya Nandella pointed to highlights from
our last fiscal year that included:
 We’re ensuring that our products and services are accessible to
meet the needs of all our customers, including the more than 1
billion people around the world with disabilities. We have
invested in accessibility of both Office 365 and Windows 10,
setting a new bar of accessibility for blind and low vision users,
including our new Eye Control feature in Windows 10 in beta
for people with ALS, and Seeing AI, a free U.S. app on iOS for
the blind which narrates the world around you.

Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 213

 We’re partnering with telecommunications companies through
our Rural Air band Initiative to bring broadband connectivity to
2 million people in rural America by 2022, hoping to serve as a
catalyst to help eliminate the rural broadband gap for the 23.4
million Americans living in rural communities who lack access
to the economic, educational, and health opportunities the
internet provides. We also continue to work outside the US with
internet access and energy access companies on technologies
and business models that will help billions more people
affordably get online.
 We believe innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. In the
past year, we completed our largest wind energy purchase to
date, allowing our Wyoming datacenter to be fully powered by
clean energy, and our new AI for Earth initiative aims to address
some of the world’s toughest environmental challenges.
 In our Fiscal Year 2017 Microsoft Philanthropies donated more
than $1.2 billion in software, and services to non-profits
worldwide as part of our focus on helping people get the skills
and knowledge they need in today’s digital economy, and on
getting powerful technology into the hands of non-profits.
 In January 2016 we announced that Microsoft would donate
more than $1 billion in cloud technology to non-profits and
university researchers. We’ve achieved that goal a year early,
donating cloud services to more than 90,000 non-profits, and we
aren’t stopping there. We announced a plan to more than triple
the number of non-profits we’ll reach to 300,000 over the next
three years.
 For more than 30 years our employees have given generously to
non-profits and the company has matched their donations
through our employee giving program, raising more than $1.5
billion to-date, and a record breaking $149 million FY17.
Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 214
 Finally, we recognize our broader responsibility to engage
thoughtfully in the public dialogue on the important challenges
facing our world. Last year we published, A Cloud for Global
Good, a comprehensive roadmap for the steps companies and
governments can take to ensure technology is trusted,
responsible and inclusive.

DIRECTIONS for questions 1-4:Study the passages below
and answer the questions that follow the passage.
Passage-1
Twenty-first-century readers can be broadly divided into two
categories: those who read e-books (in an electronic, digital
format) and those like me who prefer to curl up with the original
printed version. And so what if the world's largest online retailer
Amazon announced that it was selling 105 e-books for every
100 print books? Amazon also announced that sales of print
books were going up. Going to bed with a paperback or
Marwadi university, Rajkot Page 219
hardcover may be old-fashioned, but you can fall asleep while
reading without worrying about the battery life on the e-reader.
"As we get older, we get honester," goes the first line of
Yevgeny Yevtushenko's 1956 Russian poem, Zima Junction. As
we get older, we also get more sleepless. And for those who like
to read, nothing can be as soothing as a book that makes you
forget the problems that keep you awake and takes you away to
a different world until you fall asleep. Even the most
sophisticated e-reader is not as user-friendly as a paperback or a
hardcover that you can carry in all kinds of weather (from
snowstorms to tsunamis) and wherever you go (from the office,
the park and the zoo, to the hospital or even the metro that has
just started rolling in India's pensioner's paradise-turned-Silicon
Plateau). You can even take a book to war. A copy of Three
Men in a Boat (one of the funniest books in English literature,
first published in 1889) was found in the knapsack of a British
soldier who was killed at Spion Kop during the Boer War of
1900. Watch a telecast of any cricket match anywhere in the
world and the camera invariably zooms in on that one male or
female spectator who is reading a printed book, with the
cameraman voyeuristically trying to give the viewers a glimpse
of the cover and title. Maybe, one day, someone will publish a
book titled 'What to read at the match!' In the very first summer
after World War-II ended and cricket resumed in England, the
poet-turned-sports commentator John Arlott wrote a book, 'Off
for the cricket', which perhaps explains why Arlott was called
the voice of summer. Books remain the ideal gift for all
occasions and festivals. I have forgotten much of what they
taught me at schools, but I remember the books presented to me
at annual prize distribution functions.
