• The basics in Solomon analytics, including an understanding of the difference between EDC™, EII™, EEI, CEI™,
etc., and which metrics are most important
• What exactly is in your Solomon data files and how it is organized
• How you can use the data to answer specific questions like “Where can I find the average for the second
quartile in energy?”
• How to create custom reporting by understanding where to find the data that answers the questions you and
your managers have
• How to explain the Solomon gaps and their application to your managers
Management Courses

Managing Process Plants Effectively

(available by summer 2013)
Presented by Gary B. Fuller
Gary has more than 34 years of experience in all levels of refinery operations and management with independent
refiners on the US Gulf Coast (USGC) and Southwest US. Responsibilities included production/operations management,
planning and economics, refinery management, general management including crude acquisition/supply and
distribution, and executive management over operations and capital projects. Accomplishments include leading
a successful, private USGC refinery that earned numerous awards in safety from NPRA and the VPP Star Award
from USOSHA.
Solomon designed this course to reduce the learning curve for new or future managers who will have
responsibilities for management of process plants, such as chemical plants or refineries. With the responsibility for
safety, environmental stewardship, and performance expected by governments, communities, and shareholders, it
has never been more important for managers to understand the fundamentals of managing process plants.
What you will learn:
• Definition of operational excellence • Approaches to budgeting to control and manage costs
• Foundation blocks of successful plant operations • Elements of successful turnaround management
• Elements within each of the six foundation blocks • Successful EHS performance
• Organizational behavior and the plant manager’s
responsibility
Technical and Planning & Optimization Courses

Presented by Joe Barth

As a Senior Consultant, Joe has been with Solomon since 2004. His career includes 33 years of experience
with ExxonMobil in Planning & Optimization of refining and petrochemical complexes. Joe has a B.S. in
Chemical Engineering from Auburn University and an M.S. in Engineering from the University of Houston.

Refinery Economics
This practical course covers the economic and optimization skills needed to maximize refinery profit. It also
uses hands-on examples to illustrate Solomon’s unique approach to the intricacies of marginal economics and
the workings of Linear Program (LP) models.
What you will learn:
• Differences between average and marginal • How to evaluate crude and feedstock purchase
costs opportunities
• How to calculate refinery netback prices • Why the “herd mentality” is so common in the industry
• How to use LP models to guide decision making • How to evaluate incremental product sales
• Limitations of shadow values • Planning & Optimization best practices

Fundamentals of the Petroleum Downstream Industry

In this course, you will learn the basics of the refining business as you travel through function and operation
of a typical oil refinery. You will improve your understanding of the physical properties of hydrocarbons and
learn how refinery process units manipulate the molecules to increase value. You will also become familiar
with the jargon that industry professionals like to use and gain a clear understanding of the profit drivers in
the downstream industry.
What you will learn:
• Industry terms and jargon • Function of each major refinery process unit
• Industry structure • Refinery profit drivers
• Basic refinery chemistry • Key trends in the refining industry

Advanced Refinery Economics

(available by summer 2013)
Hydrocarbon Loss Reduction
Presented by John Havener
John is a Chemical Engineer with 33 years of industrial experience. He serves as the consulting lead engineer for
Process Control & Automation, Hydrocarbon Loss, and Integrated Refining and Chemical Site projects. He is an
inventor who has amassed 27 issued and 2 pending US patents.
This course covers the mass balance, measurement, and loss prevention methods needed to minimize profit loss
due to hydrocarbon loss. The course covers typical sources of loss along with proven, cost-effective methods to
eliminate the loss. In addition, attendees will learn Hydrocarbon Loss Prevention best practices.
What you will learn:
• Flare and fuel measurements and calculations • Industry standard targets for maximum allowable loss
• Process and aqueous loss sources • Typical hydrocarbon loss sources and standard solutions
• Tankage losses and prevention • Industry standard material balance methods and standards
• Required instrument measurement accuracy

Energy Management
(available May 2013)
Presented by Mark C. Smith
After working for Chevron and ConocoPhillips at six different refineries for more than 20 years, Mark went into
consulting in 2011. Since then he has worked with eight fuels refineries to reduce energy use and cost using
Solomon tools and methodologies. He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Oregon State University and has
a wealth of experience helping companies advance and develop operations.
Energy costs account for as much as half of a refinery’s annual operating costs in most of the world and in some
locations as much as three-quarters of operating costs. Understanding of these energy costs (including EII
calculations, benchmarking, best practice assessment, and opportunity development and implementation) is
critical. High efficiency refiners have smaller steam systems, so understanding your steam system is also key for
reducing EII and the corresponding energy costs. Solomon also finds that fired heater performance is another focus
area for minimizing your energy cost. This course teaches the essentials of effective energy management.
What you will learn:
• EII calculation methodology • Energy performance and benchmarking
• Unit EII calculations and their use • Energy 3D examples
• Energy data quality issues to look for • Furnace efficiencies
• Energy best practices, high-level look • Energy opportunity development and implementation

All course participants will receive a certificate of completion for each course attended. Presenters may change based on availability.
