Chapter 1 – Ethics, Business, and Business Ethics Individual Submission

Ethics can simply be defined as the discipline dealing with what is good
and bad and with moral duty and obligation. (Merriam-Webster, n.d.) Business
Ethics, on the other hand, is defined as the area of professional ethics which
examines the principles that govern the conduct of business as well as
individuals acting on behalf of the business. (edX.com, n.d.) Although a
company is primarily made for profit, it should not forget to attend to the
welfare of its stakeholders without the presence of deception or fraud in its so
many different kinds of business transactions.
A note that I got from the previous reports would be how thin the line
is between doing the right thing and doing the wrong thing. I mean, doing
what’s morally right can make you feel good about yourself while doing what’s
morally wrong may, depending upon the circumstances, help you gain
material things like good reputation but will make you feel bad inside, that is
if you have a conscience. There are things as well like the difference of human
acts and animal acts that I was able to learn from the reports. Human acts
are controllable while Animal acts are innate as being an animal, a human
being.
Most of my life, I relied on my own instinct when it comes to choosing
the good or the bad, not consciously knowing I was applying ethical standards
and moral discipline into my every-day life. Learning about ethics in this
course can really deepen my understanding of my own mind and how I decide
from different courses of action.
