THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE PERCEPTION OF NURSES’ HAND

HYGIENE COMPLIANCE AND HAIs INCIDENCE AT INPATIENT ROOM


OF REGIONAL PUBLIC HOPSITAL OF WONOSARI1

ABSTRACT

Background: Patient safety is a service system that is applied in hospitals to avoid,


prevent, and correct unexpected events caused by errors due to carrying out an action
or not taking action. One of the goals of patient safety is to prevent the occurrence of
HAIs. One way to prevent the incidence of HAIs is by increasing compliance of the
nurse's hand hygiene.
Objective: This study aims to determine the correlation between the perception of
nurses' hand hygiene compliance and HAIs incidence at inpatient room of Regional
Public Hospital of Wonosari.
Method: This research was a descriptive analytic study using the correlation study
method with Cross Sectional design. This research was conducted on May 2nd, 2018
at Regional Public Hospital of Wonosari with the number of 88 nurses taken by
Simple Random Sampling technique. The data analysis used Kendall-Tau statistical
test.
Result: The results showed that the perception of nurses' hand hygiene compliance
was in moderate obedient category as many as 79 nurses (89.7%), while the incidence
of HAIs was in the medium category as many as 19 patients (2.45%). For moderate
category of HAIs incidence, the perception of nurses’ hand hygiene compliance was
in moderate level with as many as 79 respondents (89.8%). Kendall-Tau test result
obtained p-value significance value of 0.022 (p-value <0.005).
Conclusion and suggestion: This study showed that there was a correlation between
the perception of nurses' hand hygiene compliance and HAIs incidence at inpatient
rooms of Regional Public Hospital of Wonosari. Nurses are expected to increase
awareness and self-reflection in improving compliance to hand hygiene.
