5 Good Characteristics of a Car Salesman

When it is time to buy a car, it is best to look for a good car salesman. Unfortunately so many of them
have bad reputations. Here are 5 good characteristics of a Car Salesman.

Honesty

A certain level of puffery is naturally for any salesperson. Expect that they will try to talk up their product
since they want to make a sale. But an honest salesman will admit that their product is not perfect. Often
a second hand car will have some issues that have to do with wear and tear. Listen carefully when he
points those out.

Fair Dealing

Some car dealers pretend to play good cop, bad cop by saying they have to run things by their manager.
More often than not that’s just a tactic to make them look like the good guy.

Warranty

Even if a car is second-hand, a decent car salesman will at least offer a shop warranty. In case there are
any defects the buyer can bring the car back to the shop to have it looked at. Nothing spells shady dealer
more than saying the car he is selling is on an “As-is-where-is” basis. In others what you see is what you
get.

Fair Trade-In

Most dealers are willing to give a reasonable amount for trade if someone trades-in their old car. There
are apps out there that help determine the fair value of a used vehicle. A good car salesman will offer
trade-in that is less that this presumed amount but will be fairly close to it.

The dealer needs to make a profit but if he is gouging on the trade then he might not be the most honest.

At the same time, if he is buying cars at cut throat prices and selling at a premium he’s probably not the
most honest of salesmen.

Minimal Add-ons

A used car salesman will try to offer upsells in the form of additional options. This is not out of the ordinary.
But a good car salesman will only offer upgrades that make sense. The budget of the buyer and his needs
must be considered. For example, cup holders or a sunroof might be reasonable add-ons. But pitching
authentic leather seats to a man on a budget feels a little dishonest.
