On November 24, 1959, at approximately 0535 c. s. t., 3 Lockheed Constellation,
W102, Flaght 595, operated by Prans ford Airianes, Inc., 2rashed onto a resi-
dentaal area acout one-fourth of 2 mle southeast of Madway Airport, Chicago,
VIanors, ki1lang all persons aocard, demolishing the sircraft, and fatally
anjuring eaght persons on the ground.
Flaght 595, loaded with cargo, took off on runway 31L of Madway at approxz~
nately 0531 c s t., November 22, 1959, bound for Los Angeles, Saliformia. As
the aircrafs begsn a lec turn, tne crew notified Madwey Tower they had received
a fire warning on the No 2 engane and had shut rt down. They also informed the
soner the flight would revurn and lend, The eircraft proceeded an = contanuing
left turn around the airport an an elliptical pattern and below the clouds which
vere based at an altatude of 500 to 600 feet.
In the turn to final approach to runway 31 the aarcraft bankea an excess of
45 degrees during whach 1t developed an excessive rate of sink. When the aarcraft
reached tne tops of the trees 1ts wings were nearly level and 14s nose was raised
am a clambing attatude; however, the descent continued ‘The wing flaps were being
retracted durang the last 5 to 10 seconds of the final descert and were found to be
symmetrically extended at 24 percent upon impact.
It 25 the conclusion of the Board that this accident «as tne consequence of
menewering the aircraft durang the turn to fanal approach in such a manner as to
cause a rate of sink from which recovery was not possable.
Investagation
