SUMMARY:

Public Distribution System is a government sponsored chain of shops entrusted with the work of
distributing basic food and non-food commodities to the needy section of the society at very cheap
prices. Wheat, rice, kerosene, sugar, etc, are the commodities distributed by PDS.

We have done this research at Panisokua village, Jorhat. In Panisokua, PDS is focusing on extending
coverage, improving delivery and increasing transperency leading to its remarkable revival. We have
collected the data from 60 respondents randomly. Our main motive was to know about the operating of
PDS in that area from different point of view, such as whether the beneficiaries are getting the facilities
properly or not. From the study, we came to know that PDS is contributing to ensure the food security
and majority of the people had a positive view to the PDS system for ensuring their food. We also came
to know about the different dimensions of the study topic such as importance and functioning of the
PDS, different drawbacks and challenges about it. It is revealed that the respondents are satisfied with
the functioning of the PDS as they gave positive feedback.
