Little David Craig Hella Johnson - Conductor Lorie Francis - Accompanist About the Conductor (Craig Hella Johnson is Director of Choral Activities at the University of Texas-Austin, where he conducts the Chamber Singers and Concert Chorale, and heads the graduate program in choral conducting. ‘Anative of Minnesota, Johrsonstudied at St. Olaf College. the Julliard School, Yale University, andthe University of Hlinois. He wasalso a student of Helmuth Rlling at the Intemational Bach Academy in Stuttgart, Germany. Under Jolson’ s leadership, the Victoria Bach Festival has received high praise for its orchestral and choral performances. National Public Radio called this festival “a Texas treasure.” In 1995, Johnson pesformed as pianist and conductor of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with te Bach Festival Orchestra. Johnson conducted his debut performance with the New Texas Festival in 1995. In addition to his performances of some of the great choral masterworks, he has conducted a broad spectrum of seldom- performed works, including John Tavener's kon of Light, Gordon Binkerd’'s Ausunn Flower, William Averit’s Afro-American Fragments, and Arvo Part’s Passio. In addition, Craig Johnson isan advocate of American song literature, founding the Insitute of American Song and presenting artists William Sharp, Phyllis Bryn-Julson, Carol Weber, Virginia Dupay and Vern Suton. Johnson's performances with the Conspirare Choir have been praised for their super’ anisuy and heve drawn national attention, The Conspirare Choir wil be one of the featured performing ensembles atthe SWACDA convention in Corpus Christi this March, Following a recent performance of his oratorio, A Dylan Thomas Trilogy, composer John Corigliano wrote: “Ielieve that Craig Johnson has understood my music in a way that Ihave never experienced before.
