Section 1-

1. Who is author?
The author is Elizabeth Taylor Walden.

2. What is the name of the theses/dissertation?

The name of this theses/dissertation is “A Case Study of Beliefs and Culturally Relevant
Practices of Four Kindergarten Teachers and ESL Reading Achievement.”

3. What is the year of the theses/dissertation?

This theses/dissertation was published in 2008.

4. What institution did the author go to? (Usually on title page.)

Elizabeth Taylor Walden attended Capella University.

5. What was the purpose of the study? (You can retype it. It’s okay if it is word for word.)
“This research study was conducted to understand the nature of teacher beliefs and
culturally relevant classroom practices and reading achievement of ESL learners. The aquisition
of this knowledge, not only contributed to ESL learners across the nation, but also equipped
teachers of ESL learners with the knowledge of cultural insensitivity issues in many classrooms.
Teachers were able to plan creative, culturally based lessons associated with state standards,
which met the needs of every learner in that classroom” (Walden 2008, Pg. 9).

6. What was the conclusion of the study? (Usually on last page. You can type it word for
word.)
“Results revealed that participants had different beliefs and different learning activities
in their classrooms; however, research revealed that the themes that came out of the research
data revealed similarities in beliefs and practices that were consistent in each classroom”
(Walden 2008, Pg. 94-94).

7. Why would this particular study be important in your field? (We are assuming it is
important.)
This particular study would be important in my field because Northwest Arkansas
increases in diversity every year. Because of the world-wide corporations based here, people
from different nations are moving their families to this area. Therefore, Northwest Arkansas is
becoming a true melting pot of cultures. As a future teacher, my goal is to meet the needs of all
of my students. In my future classroom, I am going to have students of many different
nationalities and cultures. I need to be prepared and have the tools that it takes to ensure that
these students are successful in my classroom. Taking the information provided in this article
4

regarding how to increase achievement and knowledge of the English language in ESL learners,
I can apply the successful beliefs and practices to my own classroom someday.

8. Pretend that you want to do a similar study to this one. What would you do different? Why?
(This must be a complete paragraph. Five – eight sentences. Extraneous material will not be
counted. Nor, will I could sentences such as “I would do a lot different.” Your response must be
very specific.
If I were to conduct a study similar to this, I would consider expanding the area in which
I researched. This study was focused on kindergarten teachers in rural Georgia. I would be
interested in expanding the study to multiple different states, and potentially including first or
second graders to the study. I would change this because I want to know if the study and
practices that took place in Georgia would have the same results in another state. Then, the
different states could be compared to one another for a more holistic conclusion about the
United States and the teaching practices in it. Additionally, kindergarten is an extremely
important time filled with learning and growing. However, by including other age groups (such
as 1st, 2nd, 3rd graders, etc.) as well, we could see what adjustments to the study need to be
made and shift classroom practices accordingly as children grow older and more
knowledgeable.

Section 2-

1. Who is the professor that you have taken a class with? or a professor that you are currently
taking a class with?
Last semester I took Language Development and the Educator with Dr. Vicki S. Collet.

2. What year did he/she write their dissertation?

Dr. Collet wrote her dissertation in 2011.

3. What is the name of the dissertation?

Dr. Collet’s dissertation is entitled “The Gradual Increase of Responsibility: Scaffolds
for Change.”

4. What institution did the professor go to when he/she published their dissertation?
Dr. Collet attended the University of Buffalo, State University of New York when she
published her dissertation.

5. Skip to the end of the dissertation. What was the conclusion of the study? (You can type this
word for word.)
“Coaches, like teachers in this study, should consider both transitory and progressive
scaffolding, both planned and spontaneous interactions as they move their learners, the teachers,
5

toward interdependence. By embodying the stance that good teaching is dependent upon
knowledge of where the learner is and an understanding of where the learner is ready to move
next, coaches not only facilitate the learning of teachers, they also model this sociocultural
concept as a theoretical consideration for learners of all ages” “Collet 2011, Pg. 238).
