What is TED?
TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes
or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged,
and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100
languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the
world

What is TEDxUMary?
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "Ideas Worth Spreading." It supports independent
organizers who want to create a TED-like event in their own community. The TEDxUMary team hopes
to foster a community who believe in the power of “Ideas Worth Spreading.” By bringing TEDx to the
University of Mary, you can play an integral role in creating an atmosphere for some of the most
creative, engaging and groundbreaking ideas the University of Mary has to offer.

Why sponsor?
Being a sponsor for TEDxUMary will help students and community leaders alike engage in meaningful
discussion around our theme “Because.” Your sponsorship will place your company in the midst of a
diverse audience of influential community leaders, students, and business professionals and will be
forever posted on TED talks online. Additionally, members from your company will be able to
experience the atmosphere of a TED community, hear ideas, and share your own during our breaks for

 2018 TEDxUMary Event Information
When and where is the event?
The TEDxUMary event will be held in the Gary Tharaldson School of Business on the University of
Mary’s Campus on the evening of April 4, 2018.

What is the 2018 TEDxUMary event theme?

For this year’s event, our team has chosen the theme “Because.” From the simple to the extraordinary,
TEDxUMary Because will encourage attendees to reexamine the driving forces behind human
motivation, perseverance, and achievement within our community. Our event will showcase individuals
with a unique passion for action, a distinct understanding of their own “because” story, and a
commitment to using this truth to impact the world around them. Because seeks to answer the question
of what makes us tick and reveals the critical moments that push us to make a difference.

Who will be speaking at TEDxUMary this year?

This year's event will feature five speakers from the community representing a unique variety of topics
distinctly impacting the Bismarck-Mandan community. In the spirit of showcasing powerful stories from
our own community, TEDxUMary is excited to share the incredible ideas of Dr. Brenda Tufte, Mr. Patrick
Atkinson, Mrs. Brenna Gerhardt, Mr. Dan Donlin and Mr. Tyler Auck, and Mr. Evan Anderson with the
University of Mary and Bismarck-Mandan communities.
