Why is Culture important? An organisation can not change direction until it changes the
knowledge, skills and thinking of people. Day to day activities happen because of tradition,
history and expectation. Managers need to understand Culture because:
1. Influences how power is distributed.
2. Conditions way management communicates
3. Strategy, policies, goals.
4. Influences Recruitment, training, promotion.
5. Highlights constraints.
THE ORGANISATIONAL ICEBERG
Overt, Visible, Formal and Apparent . Covert, Hidden, Behavioural
VISIBLE: Skills, Structure, Systems, Goals and Technology.
INVISIBLE: Shared values, Style, Staff, Attitudes, Conflicts, Personality and Communication
patterns.
