Differentiability and Piecewise Functions
To determine if differentiable at the point of change, x=c
Theorem:
If #(@)is continuous at x= and lim f"(x) and lim f(x) exist.
Then / is differentiable at x=c if these limits are equal.
Ifso, then f‘(c) = lim f’() = lim f"(x)
You must do the following
1) Make sure the function is continuous at x=c
S(6) = lim f(@) = lim f(s)
2) Find "(x) of the piecewise function
Find lim /"(@) and lim f(x)
These must be equalExample
Let s@)= { Sea
axtb, x>1
Find values of a and b so that f will be differentiable at x=1
Solution:
To find a and b, you need two equations in a and b!
‘One equation from continuity (3 things
‘One equation from derivative (2 thing
4) Continuity: Remember definition of continuity lim f(x) = f(¢)
F()=3(P)=3
lim f@)
=
These must be equal so
a+b=3 4st equation
2) Differentiability:
7) f 6x, x<1
a, x>1
ligs'e)=Tigana
2 equation
a+b=3
a =6
So:AB Calculus
Piecewise Functions
Example:
wel x1
2x, xl
ro={
Determine whether this function is differentiable atx
If itis differentiable, find the value of derivative at x
Solution:
A function is not differentiable at a point of discontinuity, so must check to see if f(x) is
continuous at x=1
(4) To be continuous at x=1, it must be true that
sM=lim f| [3rd part of Definition of Continuity]
FMP +1=2
Jim /(@) must be analyzed by one-sided limits
lim f (x)= lim 2x=2(1)=2 5
3 things must be equal Li f(@)= Jim 2x24) Therefore two-sided
lim f(x) =2
Jim f(x) = tim Q?+ EP +1=2(
Since f(1) =lim f(). f(@)is continuous at x=1
(2) Differentiability at x=1
li f'(@) must equal lim /'(2)
