Dear Malcom,

After reading your letter, I am much more excited to start this class! You seem like a
great teacher with a great sense of humor.

To start off, I was born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina, and I still live there. I
have two fantastic parents who practice dentistry together and a younger brother who is a junior
in high school. I also have a childhood best friend named Brendan, who when we met was much
like an honorary cousin but became more of a brother over the years. It seems my family has
some parallels to yours, where we are active with sports and scouts. I am an Eagle Scout in
Troop 215 out of Saint Mark’s Catholic Church, as well as my younger brother and best friend
Brendan. Our family also attends mass at Saint Mark’s weekly.

My hobbies are hiking, working as a lifeguard, camping, playing the guitar, cooking,
skiing, golfing and traveling (those are only a few of many). I love being outdoors when the
weather is nice, this probably is because of my scouting career. In total I spent 12 years of my
life in scouts and 10 years working towards my Eagle. I started in Cub Scouts, when I was in the
first grade and worked my way up all of the ranks. I earned my Eagle Scout on May 11, 2016. It
was through scouts that I met Brendan. I also really enjoy cooking for pleasure and of course for
others. I love going into the kitchen and seeing what I can create. Unfortunately, at Charlotte
with the dining halls I don’t get to really do much cooking. However, this does make my breaks
at home special, in addition to seeing loved ones who I have not seen in a while.

Through my travels, I have been many places. I have been to many National Parks,
the Turks and Caicos (twice), nearly all of the U.S. States, and in May I will travel to Europe to
do a Switzerland, France, England loop!

Currently I am an architecture major, I still am trying to see if I would want to do

this as a career. Luckily, I have time to decide because I am only a freshman. If architecture is
not for me, then I will most likely join the Army ROTC here at Charlotte, become a
commissioned officer and then after my service join the FBI, Secret Service, or another three-
letter agency.

Over the course of my education, I have really enjoyed writing. Writing fictional
short stories is my favorite! Currently, I am working on a book titled The End which is a project
that I started for fun a few months back. I have no desire at the moment to get it published but I
see it as a novel. Who knows maybe I will publish it!

This is just a small amount of who I am, and if you want to know more about
anything in this letter or about me please ask! I hope you have enjoyed learning about me and I
look forward to meeting you in class and through the semester!

Cheers,
Jimmy Barnes
