Evaluating an Expression with One Variable

Example: A local hospital is holding a raffle as a fundraiser. The individual cost of participating in the

raffle is given by the following expression:

5t + 3

Where t represents the number of tickets someone purchases. Evaluate the expression when t=1, t=8, and

t=10

Solution:

t=1 ·
5 (1) + 3 t=8 ·
5 8+3 t=10 ·
5 10 + 3

5+3=8 40 + 3 = 43 50 + 3 = 53

Evaluating Expressions with Two Variables

Examples:

(1) a= 7 b= 2 (2) x= 3 y= 2

a+b=? xy – y + 3x = ?

7+2=9 · ·
3 2 – 2 + 3 3 = 13

Evaluating Expressions with Two Variables: Fractions and Decimals

Example:

7j + 5 – 8k when j= 0.5 and k= 0.25

X = 7(0.5) + 5 – 8 (1⁄4)

X= 3.5 + 5 – 2 X= 6.5
