tinuously since 1960. It was originally listed as ME289A, "Foundations of the Theory of Con-
tinuous Media 1," but after a few years became ME185, "Introduction to Continuum Mechan-
ics." The course offers a concise, rigorous, elegant, and general treatment of the mechanics of
deformable continua. The enroliment has traditionally been incoming graduate students plus
some advanced undergraduates.

ten, and later digitized. A few minor corrections have been made from time to time
