Reflection

By Allan Bergano

Today, Americans of Filipino ancestry are the largest and oldest Asian American
ethnic group. Despite this significant fact, they are rarely mentioned in American history
books and/or classes. Programs featuring Filipino and Filipino American heritage fills
this void. Non-Filipino students are provided an opportunity for exploration but more
importantly, Filipino American and Filipino students are allowed to discover more about
themselves.

When Elena contacted our organization, the Hampton Roads Chapter of the
Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS), to provide input to help
formulate and design her project, we gladly accommodated her request. We, Edwina,
Ray and I, were extremely impressed with Elena's "Summit". The interactive workshops
were very effective grounded by the intergenerational conversations transpired by the
excellent moderators. The use of 'Kahoot’ as a teaching medium was well designed.
The session with Filipino students in the Philippines was my favorite. I asked, "Which is
bigger...the American dream or Filipino dream". The lively discussion validates the
need to make a concerted effort to see Americans of Filipino ancestry be included in the
American Dream.

I learned so much from the "Summit". I applaud Tallwood High School

educators, students and staff to make this community partnership a critical and relevant
reality for all involved. Thank you for allowing FANHS to be part of the program.
