Medication Errors: A medication error is any preventable event that may cause or lead to inappropriate
medication use or patient harm while the medication is in the control of the health care professional,
patient, or consumer.
Medication administration Record (MAR): A Medication Administration Record, commonly referred
to as a drug chart, is the report that serves as a legal record of the drugs administered to a patient at a
facility by a health care professional. The MAR is a part of a patient's permanent record on their medical
chart.
PO: an adverbial phrase meaning literally from Latin "by opening" or "by way of the opening." The
expression is used in medicine to describe a treatment that is taken orally. The abbreviated P.O. is often
used on medical prescriptions.
PRN: Abbreviation meaning "when necessary" (from the Latin "pro re nata", for an occasion that has
arisen, as circumstances require, as needed).
