Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Overall, the students are being engages in a worthwhile task that is
creative, hands on, visual and auditory. The activity will be through a website on the internet that is easily
accessible and is linked through our EduBlog under “Flipped Classroom.” This activity has multiple
components that are helpful towards differentiation and to engage the student.
Engagement: The specific module that the students will explore is about outer space. This website has
multiple videos and animations that are geared towards hooking a student so they will explore all that the
website has to offer
Representation: Each video has a title and a clean and well-organized default cover. There are visually
pleasing fonts, colors and links throughout the website. There are endless options of tabs to explore
throughout the website.
Action and Expression: The students are asked to create their own “board” much like the one seen in a
classroom with the standards, student work, and class supports posted. However, they are given the creative
freedom to design it how they want as long as it has meaningful information regarding the activity.

Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will begin by uploading a Flipped Classroom page on the EduBlog
website for the students to hear the instructions. In the past, the teacher has directed the students on how to
look into different activities and lessons. This particular lesson will be based off of the title, Explore the
Universe with Discovery TELESCOPE. This is the page:

The students will be asked to explore the videos on the planets, solar systems and stars. The students have
their choice of information they can take notes on. They will be asked to construct an explanation of the
differences between stars and planets. They will also be asked to evaluate the strengths and limitations of

models of our solar systems in describing relative size, order, appearance and composition of the planets and
the sun. After the student has collected information, they will build a board through the Discovery Education
website and organize their notes, site their sources and create a display of information.

This activity should be done during the flipped classroom day. The students have had prior experience
creating boards and exploring on Discovery Education. Once the students are done with the project, they will
post a link to their boards through a response in EduBlog on the Flipped Classroom page. The board will be
graded for accuracy, presentation and participation. This project integrates differentiation, because it allows
students to have a choice in building something that is comfortable to their learning styles. Once the student
has submitted their board, they will be assigned a partner, and they will be asked to review their partner’s
board. The students will be given a ticket out the door near the end of our next class meeting explaining what
they have learned and what they have never seen or heard before.

Importance of technology:
This project is being implemented in a flipped classroom setting through EduBlog. This is being done, because
the teacher was not able to be present for class. The project could be done without this technology, but this is
making a worthwhile activity accessible to the students. This learning experience not only uses EduBlog, but
also uses Discovery Education.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
This website is a safe site that is used through a log in. The only concern would be if the student is being
asked to browse through the internet for this activity if they are at home or with a substitute is that the
students may begin to search other websites that are not being asked to be used for this activity. I would ask
that the parent/substitute monitor the students every 10-15 minutes to ensure the student is staying on task
and staying on the website Discovery Education.
Reflective Practice:
This activity is a fun way to have students create notes without it feeling like a traditional pen and paper
method. The students will be able to organize their information in a creative way that is their own. The
objective is to ensure the student is learning about space, planets and stars. They are given freedom as well
as to what they can tell me or identify through their findings. After this activity, the class could take their peer
review and share with the person they reviewed. Then the students can partner up and create a graphic
organizer showing the difference between stars and other planets. Then the whole class could combine their
differences and create a communal graphic organizer to reference that could be added too. The students
could use the website Bubbl.us to create a virtual graphic organizer.
