ABSTRACT

In the Philippines, street vendors establish a significant percentage of the population's

informal economy. This study determines the access to capital sources, management of capital
and daily cash earnings of Sole Proprietor Ambulant Street Food Vendors in identified streets
of metro Tacloban. This study had a total of 45 ambulant street vendors which were analyzed
with respect to sources of capital, ownership type, and cash management strategies. The method
used was a qualitative research design which was utilized by the researchers while conducting
semi-structured interviews using a pilot-tested questionnaire in collecting data from the
respondents in the identified streets.

Key findings of this paper showed that: (1) majority of the ambulant street food vendors
acquire capital from loans from relatives and friends. Also, 11 out of 45 respondents acquired
their starting capital using their own money or savings. And the minority, which is 6 out of 45
loaned their capital from cooperatives. (2) Key findings of the analysis shows that the majority
of the population were dependent on loans. These loans come from their relatives and/or friends
in order to put up a small-scale business (3) a significant number of street vendors utilize most
of their daily cash earnings. Results suggest that a majority of them pay for education and basic
needs. Most of them do not have capitalization strategies. Which is why many of them are
struggling in keeping track of their finances.
