Benchmark Part Two

For my second home visit I decided to bring a pre-made book for her to draw and write in

because I know that in our classroom that is her strongest point and she would be happiest and

feel most comfortable about this work. When sitting down with her I asked where she would be

most comfortable making a book and she wanted to go into her room at her tea party table and

draw there. When following her into her room I asked what she wanted to write her story about

because I felt like she would have a better story to tell and would put more effort into when she

knew it was her choice.

She sat down and asked me what kind of story she should write and I told her it could be

any story she wanted but suggested to her that she should write about her family because I know

their family is very close and do a lot together. Once I said that she came up with a story about

how her and her family took their do Roxie to the park one day and she got off her leash and they

had to chase her around for a while before they could catch her and put the leash back on her. I

thought that this would be a very good story that shows off their funds of knowledge because her

parents told me at the last home engagement that they love to go to the park and they love their

dog.

Before she started I wanted to make sure she understood the plot of the story and that she

knew the beginning, middle and end so that she would get confused and would know what she

was writing. I brought the template that we used for tutoring and had her fill it out with what her
beginning, middle and end would be. She started by having the beginning be them walking to the

the park and why they decided to go. The middle she decided was going to be them losing their

dog. Lastly the end was going to be them getting her back on the lash. First I told her she needed

to start out with a title and she titled it The time that we lost Roxie and then got her back. I told

her that the title might be a little long and see if she could shorten it a little.

She eventually changed the title to Lost Dog. I then had to tell her that she needed to

write the author of the book and she looked at my super confused. I explained to her that she was

the author and to write her own name and she laughed and thought it was really fun. When

starting to write the first couple of pages she knew exactly what to write about and was having

fun drawing all the pictures and she makes them very detailed so its a very cool experience to

watch her. When she started getting to the middle she didn't know if she should've made the

whole part on one page or make it too. I decided to grab one of her picture books and show how

they do where two pages can be made to look like one and she loved the idea and made it look

like that.

Some things that I wish I could've changed about the situation was the amount of

materials I brought for her. She is a very creative person and loves to take her time and show

detail in all of her work. In our class we have a lot of different materials when we are doing our

art projects and she told me she wished she had those at her house to put in her book so I felt like

I limited her creativity in her work. I also wish I would've sat back a little more when it came to

spelling because a lot of times I struggle with kids spelling and wanting them to sit there and

sound every word out but I think in general it makes them more frustrated and in turn harms their

writing.
Overall I thought that home engagement went really well and my case study child loved

having me at her house with her doing something she really likes to do. I feel like these

engagement have brought me closer to her and that comes out in the classroom. It also shows me

how she is at home and how respectful she is to her parents so in class if she ever is disruptive I

know how great of a child she can be.
