Lesson Plan

Title: Sorting by Attributes

Curriculum Framework:

Content Name: Kindergarten

Content Number: AR.Math.Content.K.MD.B.3

Description: Measurement and Data: Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category:
Classify, sort, and count objects using both measurable and non-measurable attributes such as size,
number, color, or shape Note: Limit category count to be less than or equal to 10. Students should be
able to give the reason for the way the objects were sorted

Learning Objective
The learners will be able to:
 Develop an understanding of attributes
 Give examples of different attributes: color, size, shape
 Understand how to sort objects based on these attributes

Learning Activities
The students will meet on the carpet and watch the TeacherTube video: Sorting by Attributes
(https://www.teachertube.com/video/sorting-by-attributes-483115). The students will fill out a graphic
organizer as they watch and listen to this video. We will go over the video and graphic organizer once it
is over and discuss any questions or comments about the topic.

The teacher will then introduce the new centers and explain how the students will pick a box that is
filled with the same objects (colored paperclips, erasers, beads, etc.). They will sort the object based on
attributes. They will use their graphic organizer to help guide them in ways that they can sort their
objects.

Assessment/Evaluation
Students will be evaluated based on their completion of their graphic organizer. The teacher will check
to make sure the students have to correct definition of an attribute, as well as the different examples of
attributes that the video provided. They will also write examples of that attribute in the corresponding
square. For example, Color is an attribute and blue, red, and orange could be the examples. The teacher
will also walk around the room and observe the students working in this center and see how the
students chose to sort the objects.
