SCHOOL VIOLENCE

ACROSS THE US

INFORMATION AND STATISTICS

ABOUT SCHOOL VIOLENCE
Within the last 10+ years school safety has been a top priority – only because of the
events that have led us to today. From being able to just walk into school, you now
need to be beeped in by the secretary. The harsh truth is that the United States has
had the most school shootings in the entire world. “A couple of years ago, the
Academy of Critical Incident Analysis collected data on school violence around the
world. The took a broad look at incidents where someone was killed, or a murder was
attempted and charted every one that had two or more victims.” (Erickson, 2018). In
the study, they discovered between 2000 and 2010, there were 57 incidents recorded
in 36 countries. 28 of those incidents occurred in the United States.

Within the first month of 2018 there had been 14 school shootings. A problem that
we see in society today more than ever, is bullying. There are reasons why school
shootings are occurring.
The Federal Commission has been working on finding solutions for school violence.
“The Commission conducted field visits, listening sessions, and meeting with
hundreds of Americans all across the country.” (Education Digest, 2019). In this
report, they concluded that mental health should be a priority in fixing this crisis.
“Improving access to school-based mental health and counselling for young people
is an important aspect of prevention.” (Education Digest, 2019). Along with
policymakers, teachers and law enforcement, they are coming up with trainings and
solutions.
