The Health Of Our Oceans

Dear Professor Packer,

The purpose of my piece is to get the message across that our oceans are in grave danger.
We have polluted our world with chemicals that we have introduced into our atmosphere, our
ocean makes up 50% of our air. Forest are disappearing to make way for homes, building, and
even factories that may contribute to creating even worse air quality. We rely on our ocean to
provide us with air, food, medicine, climate regulation and transportation for goods. What
happens when the ocean's ecosystem is destroyed? Without the ocean, we will die.
Climate change is real. I believe that many people chose to ignore it because it is
terrifying. I think that everyone should take that fear and let it motivate us to create change. The
power our voices can have on the world will make an impact. Our oceans and its sea creatures
are or slowly being destroyed because of threats like acidification, ocean pollution, overfishing,
and habitat destruction. I
For my commentary, I chose to create a blackout poem. A blackout poem is when you
take a marker on an already existing text-like a page in a magazine or book-and create a poem
using the words on the page. Usually, there is a visual drawn around the text to make it become
much more meaningful. I learned it from English 2250, it was a creative writing class. I chose it
because it was an interesting and creative way on how to express my feelings through an
established text. I figured my commentary should be represented in a poem to get my message
across, and the message is that our oceans are in danger because of human errors.
My target audience is anyone who is willing to listen to the message. I can try my best to
preach about global warming but at the end of the day, people will choose what they want to hear
and believe. The best I can do is to hope that mankind will want to listen and engage themselves
to create a better future for not just themselves but for their children or family or anyone they
care for.
For my commentary, I used pathos because this is not just about an individual this topic
involves everyone. I kind of take it personally because I think of air quality and then I think of
my sick father who can hardly breathe getting up. There are days he will come home after
treatment and the dialysis nurses will have him cover his mouth because the air is not good
outdoors. It is scary to think of how many people probably go through that. The families that it
impacts.

Sincerely,

Michelle Estrada
