( 25 marks)
1) The photo shown here is real. It is a photograph taken of the world’ s largest tumor that was removed at Johns Hop-
kins University from a woman who weighed about 600 pounds. The tumor was 330 pounds and about 3 feet in diameter
(it was ovarian in origin). Her only complaint was shortness of breath and this led to an MRI that revealed the tumor.

a. In 3 sentences or less, what genes must have been activated, and what genes must not have been activated, to make
the mass of cells a tumor but not a cancer?

b. In two sentences or less, tell what type of cellular respiration these tumor cells must have used while inside her body.

2) Prepare a slide of spooled DNA by gelatin method and pack it in long brown envelope. (5pts.)
3) Transfect a mass of mammalian cell on a round coverslip and pack it over the slide. (8pts.)
4) Prepare any single type of nutrient broth for solid or liquid cell culture medium and show
in details the conposition in v/v % and calculate the proportion of cells that can be grown
in the green book provided.
Pack 20-30 ml of the broth in airtight container for sending. (2pts.)
5) Dissect a mosquito,spill out its gut contents and fix it using ethanol precipitation. (1pt. )
6) Take a drop of your blood and separate out the RNA from it fixing it on a slide. (2pts.)
