Lesson 6: Letter E
C.C. & State Standard(s): RF.K.1 Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic
features of print.
Objective(s): SWBAT recognize and print the letter E, lowercase and uppercase, and the sound
it makes.
Student Friendly Objective(s): I can recognize and write uppercase and lowercase letter E and
its sound.
Assessment: Students will practice writing the letter E by rug writing along with the uppercase
and lowercase letter E song.
Key Vocabulary: N/A
Anticipatory Set: I will play a letter song for the letter E and see how many words have “e” in
them. The words can start with the letter e or it can be in the middle of the word. I will then show
the students non-examples of how to write and upper-case and lower-case e.
Recall Prior Knowledge: I will ask the students how many of them have a letter e in their name.
I will then ask then to give me 5 different words that start with the letter e.
Input/Modeling: On the board, I will explain to them that the upper-case E when writing it does
not go in the basement. The way to write it is “Straight down, go to the top, across, across,
across.” For a lower-case e, it also does not go into the basement, but our saying is, “straight line,
up, circle back.”
Check for Understanding/Guided Practice: The students will have their hands up in the air
and say the sayings for upper-case E and lower-case e with me, and then we will do both of them
with their songs.
Closure: After singing the letter songs, the students will go to their art activity.
Independent Practice: Rug writing the letter E. Lowercase and uppercase. Students will use the
whote boards and lay around the whole group rug. Writing both lowercase and uppercase letter
E’s along with the letter songs.
Differentiated Instruction/Accommodations: Students who struggle correctly writing the letter
will get more individual instruction on correctly writing their E’s.
