Reflection

As a group, we were given a project in which we had to buy a bag of Skittles candy
individually and based on different colors, we had to calculate the proportion, mean, standard
deviation, and confidence intervals and compare the class results with our group and
individually as well. In this reflection, I will be writing about what I have learned from this
project, how it helped with problem solving skills, and how this project changed the way I think
about real-world math applications.
First, I learned a lot from this project. I think this project was a great refresh to what we
have been doing in this class. Most of the time many students tend to forget the things they
have learned at the beginning of the class, but by doing this project, everything that we learned
in the first few chapters, came back. I think this was a great review of what we did in the
beginning of the semester.
Second, group projects are always good to compare your individual results with your
other group members. In this project, we worked together to solve each problem. If I got
different results than my other group members, I’d see where I was wrong and why and this
helped to understand how others solve the same question differently or what opinion they
have.
Third, before taking this class, I never knew that there were actual surveys that was
done regarding proportions. Now I have realized that proportion is one of the real-world math
situations where people do surveys and then test them. During this class we went through a lot
of examples that were about proportions and confidence intervals that actual people had done
before and I realized how learning this can be beneficial for those who do surveys.
Finally, this group project was a great way of not only individuals coming together to
share different ideas and opinions, but also how people look at the same problem differently.
By doing this project, many of the old concepts that we had learned at the beginning of the
semester, came back to us and it was a great review. I also realized how knowing statistics can
be beneficial in solving real-world problems.
