1 AIMS
The main objective of this training module is to create a part program for the calibration of a
single stylus sensor orientated at various positions. These calibrated sensor positions will be
used later for the inspection of the capability block.
Note: ANSI standard DMIS refers to all contact and non-contact measuring heads as
SENSORS. This manual refers only to the specific probe heads fitted to LK CMMs. To this
end the words SENSOR(S) and PROBE(S) can be considered to be the same.

2 OBJECTIVES
At the end of this training module you will be able to handle the following procedures:

¾ Determine the combined rotary length of the sensor and probe head.
¾ Open a new part program for the purposes of creating and running a sensor calibration
part program.
¾ Manage the sensor database.
¾ Deal with multi-point styli.

3 CALIBRATING PROBES WITHIN CAMIO STUDIO

3.1 The Probe

There are different types of probes that can be utilised to check parts. A typical probe may be
made up from a Renishaw PH probe head, a TP touch probe and a ruby tipped stylus.
Probes can be set up in different lengths, using PE probe extension bars and stylus extension
spacers, for various applications. The length is the distance between the centre of the probe
head (the A axis pivot point) and the centre of the stylus ruby tip. The method for calculating
the probe length is explained below.

A axis pivot point

Ruby stylus tip

The probe head swivels in two axes, A and B. For the Renishaw PH9 and PH10 series of
probe heads, the indexing characteristics are as follows. The A axis is indexable between 0°
and 105° in 7.5° increments. The B axis is indexable between -180° and +180° in 7.5°
increments. The probe head X+ axis points in the same direction as the A axis cut-out.
Before calibrating any probes the actual probe length will need to be calculated. The
following steps will need to be followed when first using the machine.

Click on the Sensor icon to display the various sensor icons on the toolbar.

3.2 The Procedure for Calculating the Probe Length

A calibration sphere should be located on the machine table in a suitable position, so that the
probe is able to reach it in all 360° of freedom.

Select the Calibrate Head icon from the toolbar .

Follow the instructions that appear on the screen, asking for points to taken manually around
the sphere in several probe positions. Eventually the calculated probe length will appear on
the screen. Make a note of this length.

In addition to returning the probe length you can also record the mounted attitude of the probe
head on the CMM in the machine configuration file.

3.3 The Procedure for Calibrating the Probe
The following sequence should be taken as a guide for creating a Camio Studio part program
to calibrate probe angles within the Camio software.
It explains how to manually establish the position of the sphere on the table, and allow
automatic probe calibrations.

1. Launch Camio Studio from the desktop icon and load your personalised view layout
setting previously created.
View > Load View Layout…

Metris Training Department Probe Calibrations 7

2. Create a new file called Probe-Calibrate.dmi.
File > New Program...
The default directory is C:\LK\LKDMIS32. Other directories can be used by selecting the
Browse option.

3. Camio Studio will open an inspection program and automatically load a default program
template which can be viewed in the part program window.
The program template will appear something like the example shown below.
The program template will
define an initial start up
sequence, such as default co-
ordinate tolerance, display
output, manual operation mode,
initial probe definition, machine
axis datum and measurement
units.

Note: this template can be

modified and replaced or saved
with a new name for future
programs that might be created.

If applicable, remove any probe

info from the template inserted
in the program i.e. Define
sensor and Select sensor.

4. The calibration parameters can now be set.
Program > Configure…

5. Use the Calibration tab page to specify configuration data including the sphere position
and direction, sensor distances and calibration tolerances. The sphere position will be
automatically updated when calibration commences.
Sphere diameter -
the precise master
sphere diameter.
This number is used
to evaluate the
effective probe
radius of calibrated
sensors and must
be correct. (See
sphere certification.)
Sphere position x, y,
z - the position of
the sensor
calibration sphere in
machine co-
ordinates.
Sphere direction i, j,
k - the direction
cosines for the stem
of the calibration
sphere.
Clearance distance - the distance from the current location to which the sensor will
move before the probe head manipulates the sensor to the next position and the
clearance plane for approaching the calibration sphere.
Depth distance - the distance below the equator of the sphere at which the sensor will
take points.
Approach distance - the distance from the touch point where the probe path becomes
normal to the touch point on the calibration sphere. The CMM will approach the
calibration sphere from this distance at touch velocity.
Roundness - the tolerance applied to the roundness of the calibration measurement on
the calibration sphere. The sensor calibration fails if the roundness exceeds this
tolerance.
Tolerance - the tolerance applied to the difference between the nominal probe radius
and effective probe radius, evaluated in the calibration procedure. The sensor calibration
fails if the difference exceeds this tolerance.

Number of points - the number of points to be taken by the built-in calibration routine.
6. Enter the correct sphere diameter and number of calibration points. Click Apply to submit
changes.
7. At the beginning of the calibration program it is good practice to delete all existing probe
calibrations especially if changes have been made to the probe head setup or calibration
sphere position. Click on the Delete icon on the toolbar.

8. Check All sensors to delete all calibrated probes in the probe database:

9. Click on the Calibration Wizard icon on the toolbar:

Enter a suitable label

name for the probe.

10. Click Yes to the prompt to allow manual measurement of the calibration sphere. This will
allow the machine's configuration to be updated automatically.

11. Take four points around the sphere.

The machine will then repeat the measurement of the sphere in Automatic mode taking
nine points. Each probe will then be calibrated in turn.
12. On completion of all calibrations move the probe to a safe position.

13. Click on the Move icon on the tool bar.

14. Click on the Absolute icon.

Metris Training Department Probe Calibrations 11

Move the probe to a clear
position above the sphere
and click Teach to record
the current position.

15. Click on the Select sensor icon.

16. Orientate the probe angle to (0,0) by selecting (A0B0) from the drop-down list.

The calibration program has now been created.

NOTE: WHEN RUNNING A PROGRAM THROUGH FOR THE FIRST TIME, ENSURE THE
SLOW SPEED BUTTON IS PRESSED ON THE HANDBOX.

4 CALIBRATING STAR STYLI

Star styli are calibrated in the same way as single point stylus except the stylus offset needs
to be entered in the direction of the probe head axis system that the stylus is pointing along.
See Section 3.1 for an explanation of the probe head axis system.
For a bridge machine the probe head X+ = the CMM X+
For a horizontal arm machine the probe head X+ = the CMM Z+
