Lesson Idea Name: Alternative Book Reports

Content Area: Language Arts
Grade Level(s): 6th Grade
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE6RL5: Analyze how a particular sentence, chapter, scene, or stanza fits
into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the theme, setting, or plot.

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE 5c: Students break problems into component parts, extract key
information, and develop descriptive models to understand complex systems or facilitate problem-solving.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Describe how you could address Universal Design for Learning principles
to extend and support the learning experiences for all students.
Engagement: Students are engaged because they get to choose the book and the method of expressing their
knowledge of it
Representation: This project activates students background knowledge as they are to choose a source in
which they have familiarity in to do their project and then use it to show the knowledge we have
demonstrated in class.
Action and Expression: Students are able to express the their knowledge through multiple mediums including
coding. Students will also get feedback from the teacher and students when they present their product to the
class.

Lesson idea implementation: Students are told to choose their own novel for the independent reading unit.
All novels have to be approved by the teacher before using. Throughout the unit, we will be doing activates
with the novels to demonstrate are understanding of the standards. For this lesson, we will be focusing on
how a particular scene fits into the overall theme of a novel. Students are given a lesson on theme where they
have to read the short story, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, while the teacher goes over it to show the
scenes that relate back to the theme.

Afterwards, for the project, students are asked to pick a scene from the novel and then display it through a
format that they feel is best, whether through coding, a video, or any other format as long as it is teacher
approved. Then they are asked to give a short explanation of why it fits. This can be in audio format, written,
or any other way related to the mode they choose to demonstrate it. Afterwards, we will present these
projects in class and provide feedback and discuss the project as a class.
Importance of technology: While this project could be completed without coding, I believe incorporating it
into this project is important as it is important for people who have an interest in coding to be able to use that
and demonstrate that in my classroom.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: I will provide students with sources to find images and video clips so that
they do not go onto sites that they are not allowed to find the images and clips. I will also educate my students
in the importance of not sharing any of their personal information while online. I will also provide my students
with a list of safe websites and tools to complete their activities with.

Reflective Practice: I think this lesson will have a great impact on student learning as it enables them with free
choice which will make them more likely to be engaged with the material. I love this project because it shows
me what my students are interested in and gives me a chance to learn the funds of knowledge of my students.
