JEE Main

Chemistry for class 12 is a feared subject that requires a

lot of memory power and theoretical “mugging up” in
order to score marks in the CBSE exams. This general
notion brings down the confidence level in many students.
But Chemistry should be viewed as a subject which
“throws away” marks to its students. Let us learn how to
crack this chemistry.
Chemistry For Class 12:

Chemistry is divided into three parts – Organic,

Inorganic and Physical.

1. Organic Chemistry

A sure shot scoring area as the concepts revolve around

specific rules. Hence it is necessary to study these rules
and exceptions for certain reactions.

Chapters like Alcohols, Phenols and

Ethers and Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic
Acids (Unit 11 and 12) are the most important and have a
higher weightage of questions. Fundamental reactions
like Nucleophilic substitution/addition, Electrophilic
substitution/addition and named reactions
like Williamson, Wolff-Kishner, Hell-Volhard-
Zelinsky, Clemmenson Reduction are important and 5
mark questions can be asked directly to explain each of
the processes and questions like stepwise conversion from
one compound to another are definitely expected every
year.

Another part where stress should be given is the IUPAC

naming of compounds and the use of
different reagents to test the presence of compounds (like
Tollens’, Baeyers’) will easily fetch you the short answer
type questions allotted 1/2 marks.
2. Inorganic Chemistry

Without a doubt, the NCERT material provided in

Inorganic Chemistry for class 12 is the primer in the field.
It is important to read through the entire chapters of
Inorganic Chemistry as the student is tested on his/her
memory of certainreactions. Most of these questions are
direct and Units 6 to 9 are the most important. This
section will be taught after Physical Chemistry but it is
always advisable to start preparing these topics in
advance.

Coordination Compounds and p-Block elements (8+

Marks with a sure 5 Mark question expected from this
chapter) are the most important chapters in Inorganic
Chemistry. There is a soft spot for Noble gases and
Halogens as there always are some questions asked from
these topics in the exam. Develop a “Reaction Book”, a
book listing ALL the reactions when you are preparing.
This book should be gone through at least once a week
and will prove to be very useful during the revision time
at the end and also for your JEE Main and JEE
Advanced and other entrance exams’ preparation time.

3. Physical Chemistry

One word. Toppr. Solve this question bank provided by

Toppr on their website which contains a lot of problems
in physical chemistry. One should be very thorough with
their formulae and should be able to apply in any way
modified. The only way to get a good sense over this
would be to practise more and more problems.

Chapters like Surface

Chemistry, Solutions, Electrochemistry and Chemical
Kinetics come under this category and there is no
exception as to which are important.

Practising the problems provided at the end of each of the

chapters helps and sometimes, we can expect the same
model questions appearing in the exams as well! Toppr
applies to the Organic and inorganic chemistry as well.
Also, solve the past year papers and write them as an
exam during the final revision time so as to improve your
answering speed and this will also give an idea of time
management as the paper might get lengthy at times.
Good for exam simulation.

All the best for your journey!

Should I call it the main examination or simply put it as

the stepping-stone on the path of JEE Advanced
2016 preparations? But, for all those who see it as the
latter – mind you, dear friends – this is the only option
viable and good enough if destiny has its way. Here is a
story of how I cracked JEE and made it to IIT Roorkee:

How I Cracked JEE

Coming to the technicalities of the JEE Main examination
and the ranking system preferred, I suppose every one of
us is well versed with the importance of the Board
Marks in this examination. So, we shall concentrate on
cracking the JEE Main, but shall not leave the Boards
untouched – I absolutely understand your concern of the
variation in patterns and the questions, along with the
level of difficulty and devotion required, but I assure that
we shall have it all covered.

Let me lay out the details of the JEE Main and Boards
preparation modalities and the importance:

For JEE Main and Boards, follow the 3 X 3 +

1 approach to study, and you shall have it all. So,
what exactly is it?
Allot 3 hours to each of the three subjects: Physics,
Chemistry and Mathematics, as you already must have
guessed, but then with a twist. Go through the basic
concepts in the first hour, then do the problems in the
second hour, and then re-visit the concepts that you were
unable to apply in the third hour. This way, you will know
the concepts and become acquainted with the problems as
well. When solving questions for the first time, keep a
book of theory along with the problems to refer and
understand the problem solving approach using different
concepts.

Now, the +1 hour daily goes to the subjects you have

for Boards – English and the alternative ones. Give one
hour daily to either solve the previous year papers or you
can even go through the NCERT books. This shall allow
you to prepare the Boards along with the JEE Main
preparation.

Then comes the eminent timing factor. Make sure that

you study from 9:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00 in the
day, and then from 18:00 to 21:00 in the evening, with
the one hour being dispersed throughout your breaks,
from 12:00 to 2:00 or after 21:00. By this, your mind shall
be set with the JEE pattern and your brain shall be ready
accordingly.

Go for Mathematics in the morning session, Physics in

the afternoon, and then Chemistry in the evening with an
alternative time-table like:

 Monday-Tuesday: Inorganic,

 Wednesday-Thursday: Organic, and

 Friday-Saturday: Physical.
Now, keep Sunday as an evaluation day. Get some JEE
Main pattern tests of some institute or solve Question
banks and Test series online. Give JEE Main on one
Sunday, and Board Test on the other. Make sure you sit
in the sessions of 9:00 to 12:00 for JEE Main, and 10:00
to 13:00 for the Boards. You can evaluate those papers on
Monday, and go through all the solutions for better
clarity. And, after the tests kick off your shoes and have
all the fun in the world!

This is how I cracked JEE. This approach helped me to

the fullest, and I hope that it works for you as well.

All of you preparing for JEE Main 2018 still have about 4
months before the day arrives. It is not rocket science to
understand that an examination of this magnitude requires
the most diligent and honest effort from your end. If you
envisage yourself as a successful Engineer in prospect
then initiate by engineering a flawless strategy and study
plan for cracking JEE Main 2018.

Strategy for IIT JEE Main 2018:

Instead of a direction-less slog for hours together,

engineer an intelligent strategy for JEE Main 2018. One
of the most crucial things that students tend to overlook is
their performance at boards’ examination. Sure the HRD
might approve of CSAB’s recommendation of not taking
12th scores into account but we don’t know anything for
sure yet. So as of now, 12th board marks still hold the
40% chunk that it used to before. Since the induction of
new normalization procedure, it becomes imperative for
JEE Main 2018 aspirants to perform exceptionally well at
their boards. A percentage of 95% and above will surely
help in fetching a good rank in JEE Main 2018. Boards’
preparation not only contributes to your JEE Main
preparation but also ensures a rank. So, study hard for
your boards as well. If at all the recommendation of
eliminating boards’ marks weightage comes to
implementation, you have nothing to lose; the studies will
help you anyway.

Plan for IIT JEE Main 2018:

For your rank at the objective type JEE Main 2018, you
need to:

1. Join a coaching class, if possible, as they provide

competitive training and practice that is essential for your
preparation. If you think studying at home works better
for you and you are self-disciplined enough to follow a
schedule, very well. Statistics show that almost half of the
candidates whether appearing for JEE for the first or
second time do that too. While you study at home, you
might as well have an external exposure to the
competition out there. Solve a large number of questions
whilst monitoring time, measure your strengths and
weaknesses effectively and appear for enough number of
test series to see where you stand in the competition.
Toppr is an exhaustive platform to provide you all of this
right at your home. They have free question banks as well
as test series built by elite IITians themselves. The level
of difficulty is exactly what is required in JEE. What is
best is the assessment system in Toppr. You get instant
reports of how well you did, the time you took, your weak
areas, etc. Try using this for yourJEE Mains prep and we
are sure, you will be benefitted.

2. Study way above the CBSE level: include additional

study material once you are through with the concepts.
Following are some highly recommended JEE booksthat
may help a lot:

 Physics: HC Verma, Dc Pandey, Resnich Halliday (Volume

I & II), O.P Tondon

 Maths: RD Sharma, Arihant

Books. Cengage, Trignometry, Coordinate Geometry – SL
Loney, Algebra – Hall and Knight, Calculus – Thomas and
Finney

 Chemistry: NCERTs for Inorganic chemistry, Paula Bruice

for Organic, Numerical Chemistry-P Bahadur
3. Divide the entire syllabus into a monthly/ weekly time
table. Assort the subject you want to study each day on
the basis of your liking or difficulty.

4. Practice! Practice! Practice! Assign ample time for

revisions and practise solving as many questions and
mocks as you can. Reserve the last couple of months for
only revision and test series.

5. Design some flash cards or concept-wise notes for each

topic as they really help during revision. Especially,
topics that have formulae in them.

6. Take help from your mentors and seniors for concepts

or stress related issues as they can be your best guide.
Toppr, here, has a brilliant solution for this. We have
IITians who can mentor you and be your guide in
anything and everything you need help in. All you need to
do is book a slot with a click and talk to one of
the IITians.

7. Never ever compare your preparation with that of your

peers. It will demoralize you or make you complacent.
Stick to your study regime and keep practicing. If you are
putting hard work and smart work together, you are on the
right track.

8. Even if you have not realized it yet, social sites are a

big waste of time. Stop indulging in them too much as
you need to save your energy for better things.

9. Be clear of the all the exam related information

about JEE Main application forms, dates, eligibility and
keep it pasted on your walls so that you don’t miss out.

Above all, have faith in yourself to crack IIT. It works!

All the very best!
