Health, Safety and Environment Specialist
National Silicates, an affiliate of PQ Corporation, requires a highly motivated HSE Specialist with
excellent analytical, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills to support our
Canadian operations.
Provide direct HSE support to several facilities in Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec. Other travel outside Canada may be needed.
Provide support in the management of our Responsible Care Management System which
includes ISO 14001 and RC 14001.
Analyze the work environment and develop programs designed to control, eliminate, and
prevent occupational disease and/or injury and/or environmental harm caused by physical,
chemical, biological agents or ergonomic factors. Must be able to align these with the
organization’s requirements in order to maintain consistency.
Provide technical support to front line leadership on matters related to occupational safety,
environmental compliance, and loss prevention.
Conduct field and site inspections to enforce adherence to laws, regulations and employer
policies governing occupational safety and environmental compliance.
Assist with the collection and submission of data required to satisfy environmental permit
and reporting requirements (air, water, land). Must be able to interpret the technical
information.
Prepare reports for use by company personnel and regulatory agencies. Provide HSE support
services to plant operations.
Develop and manage initiatives to promote a proactive health and safety culture, including
processes designed to increase employee involvement, education, and recognition by
participation in safety committees, incident investigations, training, occupational health
matters and compliance auditing.
Collect and interpret injury data to identify trends and/or causal factors, such as system
failure, human error, incomplete or faulty decision-making, or a weakness in existing policies,
practices and regulations.
Investigate incidents and non-compliance events to determine contributing factors and
recommend remedial action to prevent reoccurrence.
Liaise with regulatory agencies on matters related to reporting and/or investigating
compliance concerns.
Develop and deliver regulatory required training related to health, safety, and environment.
Act as a resource to the JHSCs.
