Young Music Video Directors

-Cole Bennett-
So, I have chosen to look at Cole Bennett because I wanted to look at a few ‘young’
music video directors and this is because since I am directing my own music video I
will need to know what skills I need and what kind of knowledge I need to have
before I start filming my music video.

So Cole Bennett is a 22-year-old director that has worked with the likes of Juice
WRLD, Kanye West and even Mac Miller and to work with that kind of level of artists
he needs to have a lot of knowledge so this is why I have picked him so I'll go over
different productions of his and analyse his work and explain why I like it and why it
has inspired me.

Cole Bennett has inspired me to direct my own music video by being able to take
something from your mind put it on paper and then produce it which I want to do so
some of the work that he’s produced with the likes of Kanye West and Mac Miller, so
here is a song, Carnage - LHTW ft. Mac Miller & MadeinTYO (Dir. by
@_ColeBennett_) so even though this song is the quite opposite of what I want to do
so a slow-paced night time song I still want to follow Cole Bennett’s editing and in
this song there’s an interesting editing style of the music video flowing really well,
and the editing is really creative and what I mean by this is in one of the shots there’s
a cloth or some object that went past the screen which transitioned into a different
shot also

Here you can see there are leaves that have been edited onto the video so it seems
like the camera is in the tree to create an illusion as well as throughout this video
there's an effect on the background where the video twists in a way but whatever is
in front of the effect stays still, as well as that the leaves are out of focus so the
audience gets to see beyond the image in front.
Camera angles
Extreme Close Up, Close Up, Drone Shot, Zoom out and Zoom In, Tracking Shot
Audience
The audience is most likely late teenagers/ young adults that are fans or rap
Editing
Editing is very creative a lot of cartoon effects and transitions at the start flashing to
transition.
Lighting
Lighting is all natural
Sound
The sound of a car handle and car door closing, car cruising on a road.

So to move onto the second most popular production of Cole Bennett is YNW Melly
ft. Kanye West - Mixed Personalities (Dir. by @_ColeBennett_) and straight of
there's a repetitive effect of like a twisty smudge effect and this is what it looks like…

And this is really interesting because it makes me think like there's steam on the
camera lens and it makes a smudge effect on the artist.
So another effect which repeats itself is when the object goes across the screen and
it creates a transition….
So this is also a good editing effect as it’ll be helpful in my music video as I will be
using a lot of transitions in mine.

-BRTHR-
(Alex Lee and Kyle Wightman)
So Alex and Kyle are an Editing and Direction duo and they indeed as well as Cole
Bennett are young and passionate and have already had experience with big artists
such as The Weeknd, Travis Scott and Iggy Azalea. So from them, I got inspired by
them working as a duo hence why I have a sub-director in my plan and some of their
work has inspired me so different elements such as editing and the different editing
techniques the expand through-out the videos and working with the likes of The
Weeknd and Travis Scott they need to be really good at their job so I'll go over
some of their productions and analyse different aspects of them.
So first up ill go over is Travis Scott - goosebumps (Official Music Video) ft. Kendrick
Lamar and this music video is edited at a really complicated pace and style so the
editing type is called the ‘Trippy Editing Effect’ which is a lot of effects that make no
sense what so ever its designed to grab the viewers attention and because that it
gave me the inspiration to think about using something along the lines as shown...
So as you can see this music video has a weird type of flow it follows the beat of the
song but has a ‘different’ editing style it almost meant to be chaotic and no I am not
looking forward to making my music video chaotic but there are some interesting
transitions in this music video that I want to use.
Also, I get the impression of that Alex and Kyle wanted to make this music video to
seem like what a person feels like when they do ‘Drugs and Alcohol’ they wanted to
make an impression of what it looks and feels like.

So the second production of BRTHR is Iggy Azalea - Bounce (Official Music Video)
and this music video has no meaning to me lyrical wise or genre-wise I am looking at
this because I am looking for editing ideas and any kind of visual effects that I can
gather in.
So what I have gathered from the first minute or so is that this music video is edited
with the style of what I want to do which is mime the song and have random
cinematics and from this music video, this is about it what I wanted to gather.
And this is how I have been inspired to do a mime music video with cinematics the
rest is all editing and looking into how to edit my video.

Moving onto the third and final production is The Weeknd - In The Night and this
music video has inspired me to set the mood of the song at night the genre of this
song does not match with mine but the editing and the flow of the song go really well
together and one thing I have realised that BRTHR use a really complicated and
chaotic editing style and this music video has me on the decision whether I make my
music video really creative with the editing or do I make it simple with different and
new editing techniques.

-Karena Evans-
Karena Evans is a 22-year-old director that has really big success in the music
industry especially at this age she has directed music videos for artists like Drake,
SZA and Sean Paul. So as I said before for Cole Bennett to produce music for artists
like that they need really really big knowledge and that's why I picked Karena Evans
as the third producer as she has worked with the likes of Drake has to be really
trusted with her skills also I have chosen her for my inspiration because I wanted a
third producer to compare to the other two as well and what Karena Evans does is
she keeps her work simple like ‘God’s Plan’ its a simple music video about giving
money away to the ones who need it which definitely attracted audience to watch the
music video and what do I mean about ‘keeps her work simple’? So ‘God’s Plan’ is a
simple directed music video as all there had to be is find people that need money
and give it to them it wasn't a mass production video that required travelling around
America. So in this music video, there’s, day and nighttime used and the lighting
during day time is natural whilst at night is usually used from the ‘donated cars’.

For the second production is the song Garden - SZA which is so this song is really
simply directed as well as it has quite a few cinematics followed by SZA miming the
song which is what I want to do and it's simply edited which is what I'm looking
forward to doing keeping my work tidy and simple.

And the final and third song and artist is Sean Paul- Tek Weh Yuh heart this song is
again produced with a lot of cinematics and that's what I like Karena Evans’
production is really good because its simple and easy to direct also I get ideas of
how slow to move the camera and what kind of editing speed to put on the videos to
keep the frame rate really good and that's how Karena's directory makes me inspired
because I know how to manage different tasks that she has done and implement
them into my planning.
