Prompt 1
Urrea decides to deeply explain the members background because it puts all of their
reasoning together and it gives flow and understanding to the book. For example, he tells the
story of Lorenzo Ortiz. He was a small plantation owner and had five kids he was no longer able
to provide for. “but no coffee money, no money at all.” Pg. 145. Just like him many other men
decided to cross with the purpose of providing for their families. Enrique Landeros Garcia also
decided to go for his family especially his son. “Alexis had cried, “daddy, don’t go!” but, he said.
I personally would’ve reacted the same way they did. Especially if it was the first time
going people never really understand the danger they will face. They all have their eyes on the
bigger picture which is improving their life style. I think that being the man house hold figure
makes you have an obligation to better yourself for your family and always meet their needs.
This is how these men felt and thought so they decided to go on with the journey.

The most impactful event of the devil’s high way for me would have to be about the 16-
year- old. Towards the end of the book they tell us that he gives up and just falls on the floor.
They later tell us how he was found days later still alive. “It must have been his sixteen-year-old
body that kept him alive” pg. 175. This really touched me because he is my age and he risked his
life just to come to the United States. After days of laying in the sun, by the time he was found it
was too late. “He raised his hands as the machine landed. He put his head down. He died”. Pg.
176.
These types of events help the story a lot because it allows people to connect with the
book. It truly helped me understand the meaning of life and to value the important things. Family
and friends are a huge part of live and I also now understand that money is not more important
than that. Describing each character’s journey with so much detail helped the flow of the book
