Vocal Technique

Haaseman, Fauke; Jordan, James. Group Vocal Technique. Hinshaw Music Inc, 1991.
Print.

This resource will be important to me as I will often be faced with the challenge of developing
students’ vocal technique in the ensemble setting. Not very often will we have the opportunity
to meet with students individually, so understanding how to hear individual voices and
articulate specific instructions for vocal technique will be important.

Lana, Robyn. Voices in Harmony: Youth Choir Leadership, Education, and Artistry. Alfred
Music, 2017.

This resource is highly applicable to today’s educational climate as coordinating a youth choir
goes far beyond making music. It requires a determined leader who will advocate for teaching
children the importance of making music and contributing to musical culture. This book covers
the knowledge needed to achieve such goals from the director’s position.

Music Literacy

Cole, Samuel W., and Lewis R. Leo. Melodia, A Comprehensive Course in Sight-Singing.
Philadelphia: Oliver Ditson, 1903. Print.

This book is a great example of teaching music literacy through sight-singing and separating
tonal and rhythmic elements before combining them into melodic sight-singing. Exercises such
as this are created using years of research that support the learning process and will be great
for me to implement in my classroom.

Crocker, Emily, and Joyce Eilers. The Choral Approach to Sight-Singing. Vol. 1, Jensen
Publications, 1990.

This book is a good resource for me as once I have established good sight-singing abilities in my
class, it will be important to implement this in good choral technique and have my choirs sight-
singing in parts. Similar to my previous resource, it is composed by years of research that
support the learning process and will best benefit my students in every way possible.
