Philosophy of Nursing

The philosophy of nursing is a complex concept with many different components that

encompass it. I believe, the philosophy of nursing focuses on much more than healing your

patients. It involves the mind, body, and spirit to improve one’s health and wellbeing. Nursing is

more than what happens within the hospital and more closely relates to the environment around

someone and the mind that carries them through life. Nurses not only promote health in the

clinical setting, but among patients, their families, and the entire community they interact with. I

believe that nursing care should focus more on the person as a whole, instead of focusing on

solely their illness. Health and wellness is not defined as the absence of illness but more as the

state of being sound with one’s body, mind, and spirit.

There are a multitude of traits that nurses should exhibit to deliver well-rounded and

proper care to their patients. Nurses should demonstrate caring and compassionate qualities

towards their patients. In addition, they should offer themselves as an advocate for patients to

ensure that the patients are receiving the best quality of care. Patients are vulnerable during these

times in their life and nurses are often their only source of advocacy towards their health and

wellbeing. They should have the patients best interest in mind and keep them at the center of

their career. Above all, I believe that nurses should form trusting relationships with their patients.

This not only helps the nurse, but the patient as well, because they are able to confide more in the
nurse. In return, the nurse can determine the most important priorities for their patient and plan

their care around these priorities. Nurses play a big role in the lives of patients/ and the

community around them. They incorporate the mind, body, and spirit into healing their patients

and bettering their community.
