QUESTION 1 Answer BOTH parts (a) and (b) (25 marks)
‘The human gastrointestinal system consisting of the stomach and intestines may be
modeled as two reactors in series where a liquid phase reactant A passes through a Mixed
Flow Reactor (MFR) followed by a Plug Flow Reactor (PFR). The reactant, with initial
concentration Cay = 1.0 mol L', undergoes a biochemical reaction in both reactors

PEFR may be taken to be twice that of the MFR and the conversion of A in the final product
stream is 99%,
represented by the rate equation, ~

(@) Calculate the space-times of the MFR and PFR in the above reactor system. (15 marks)
(b) A chemical engineer decides to model the above reactor system as a single Recycle
Reactor with volume equal to the total volume of the MPR and PFR. Determine the
recycle ratio of this Recycle Reactor model of the human gastrointestinal system. (10

QUESTION 2 Answer BOTH parts (a) and (b) (25 marks)
A liquid stream containing reactants A and B enters a Plug Flow Reactor (PFR) followed
by a Mixed Flow Reactor (MFR) where the space-time of the MFR is twice that of the
PER. The concentration of cach reactant is 1.0 mol L' and the reactants undergo the
following parallel reactions:

where tx = 2C,Cg (mol L' min") and ts = Ca”°C p> (mol L! min’),
(a) Calculate the space-times of the PFR and MFR required to achieve 90% conversion of
A in the final product stream, (10 marks)
(b) Hence, find the concentrations of $ in the product stream of the PFR and in the final
product stream leaving the MFR. (15 marks)
