Boston University College of Arts & Sciences
TO: Provost David Campbell
FROM: Virginia Sapiro, Dean of Arts & Sciences
SUBJECT: Stage I proposal for a new degree program leading to the B.A. in Architectural Studies
DATE: February 22, 2010
The College of Arts & Sciences requests approval of the enclosed Stage I proposal to establish a new
y undergraduate major leading to the B.A. in Architectural Studies. On advice of our
‘Humanities Curriculum Committee and Academic Policy Committee, the full Arts é& Sciences faculty
‘voted unanimously to endorse this proposal at our meeting of November 16, 2009,
‘The proposed degree program is the centerpiece of « comprehensive curricular initiative in architecture
‘that has been led by Art History’s Director of Architectural Studies Keith Morgan in close consultation
with colleagues in his department, the CFA School of Visual Arts, the American & New England Studies
Program (ineluding Preservation Studies), MET’s City Planning and Urban Affairs programs, and the
ENG Department of Mechanical Engineering, Statements of cognate endorsement (and enthusiasm) are
enclosed here from all of those units, as well as from the departments of Mathematics & Statistics and
Physics, where students in this “pre-architecture” liberal arts major will take foundational courses that are
prerequisites for admission to competitive M.Arch. programs.
‘The B.A. in Architectural Studies requires core courses in the history, analysis, and technology (including
calculus and physics) of built environments, studio courses offered in the School of Visual Arts, and an
"upper-level research seminar. Also included are possible electives in CAS, CF 4, ENG and MET. The
B.A. takes advantage of BU’s architecture-rich environment, matching existing curricula, faculty strength,
and institutional networks to significant student interest, including among students who, on their own
jnitiative, have pursued architectural studies as an independent concentration. The sharing of core
coursework with the architectural history track within the existing Art History major creates a nice
efficiency and will allow individual students to make informed decisions about their undergraduate and
post-graduate trajectories,
‘No new resources are needed to launch the proposed B.A. At its inception, it will draw entirely on current
coursework and already budgeted faculty assignments, including the part-time appointment of a
practitioner to teach the required course on architectural technology and materials. The program will be
housed and administered in the Department of Art History, and Professor Morgan will take the lead in the
advising and mentoring of majors.
‘Thank you for your continuing support of our cross-school initiatives in the liberal and ereative arts,
Enclosure

Focus of Progcam: The program will combine core courses in the history of architecture and urban
planning with studio courses in the College of Fine Arts, a course in calculus and an introductory
course in physics. The eleven-course major will allow students to tailor their program to their future
focus in the design professions while insuring a broad and appropriate background. All students will be
required to complete ame course on architectural technology and materials and a research seminar on
a topic in the history of architecture and urbanism.
‘Need for Program: Since the University has no school of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or
City and Regional Planning, this program will allow students to complete a bachelor’s degree that
incorporates the courses required for application to a professional masters program after leaving
Boston University
Relation to Existing Programs: As a new concentration within the Art History Department, the BA
in Architectural Studies will formalize 2 program that has only existed as an Independent |!
Concentration. The number of students interested in this pre-architecture training has grown
steadily, but students often do not discover the current independent concentration until itis too late
for them to pursue this course or they have left the university because they assume no such
concentration is possible,
