REFLECTION ON NUTRITION

In this class I learned a lot about how to properly fuel my body. During my medical assistant
training we touched on a lot of the ideas I learned, but it expanded in greater detail in this
nutrition class. For an example, I learned about iron deficiency before, but I never knew that
dairy could block your body from absorbing iron, while vitamin C boosts the body’s ability to
absorb iron. I have also previously learned about eating disorders, but I feel like this class
answered all of the remaining questions I had about the subject. I loved learning about how
athletes fuel their bodies a little differently than non athletes. I am a circus performer, and I like
to consider myself an athlete, and the information obtained to this class was very relevant to
my situation.

I have always viewed nutrition as a vital part to living a long and happy life, but now I
understand more of why I feel that way. It was crazy to read about how nutrition has a direct
link to so many health issues that people fear. We have the power to be healthy and happy, we
just have to utilize the principles and information taught in this class. I feel like my
understanding has changed, and I will be much more conscious about what goes into my body. I
will absolutely used my plate after this class and refer to the text book. I think after doing my
research paper I will be more careful to understand the origin of the foods I eat as well, and I
will absolutely be sure to pay closer attention to food labels. I don’t know that I fully
understood how to really read a food label before taking this class, and that is something that I
value as well. I feel like the 10$ challenge, food label assignment, as well as the research paper
were my favorites. All three of them challenged me to look at nutrition in a different light. I
enjoyed this class quite a bit and have already implemented some of what I’ve learned into my
daily life.
