DIAGRAMS
Những chiến lược chung
4
Hãy tự mình viết first draft (bản đầu tiên) và hãy hoàn thành nó thật nhanh, tránh vừa viết vừa sửa
– chỗ nào không biết thì cứ tạm chèn tiếng Việt vào cũng được. Thậm chí 90% first draft là tiếng
Đặt biển báo đúng chỗ (ví dụ: the first diagram, the second diagram)
Key words cần thuộc làu
Khi miêu tả diagrams, bạn sẽ luôn cần đến những từ vựng như quy trình, các bước trong quy
trình, bộ phận, chi tiết cấu thành máy móc. Hãy học thuộc những từ sau:
the start/the end of a cycle: điểm bắt đầu/kết thúc quy trình
There are five key steps to complete a full cycle…: Có năm bước
chính để hoàn thành một vòng khép kín…
There are four main stages in the development/construction/…: Có
After bricks are baked at a temperature, they will be cooled down in a separate chamber.
After bricks are baked at a temperature, they are to be cooled down in a separate chamber.
Cấu trúc “be + to do” (chủ động) và “be + to be done” (bị động) thể hiện sắc thái ý nghĩa tương lai
hay trách nhiệm cần làm. Cái hay của cấu trúc này là đây là thời tương lai trên lý thuyết, tức là
theo quy trình đó, thì tiếp theo, điều gì sẽ xảy ra, chứ không phải là sắc thái tương lai về thời gian.
Vì đặc điểm này, cấu trúc “be + to do” được khuyến khích sử dụng hơn so với “will + do.”
In the next step, the air is to be sucked back into the column to turn the turbine.
10
Với bài diagrams, noun phrase bắt đầu bằng “how”, “where” và “when” là phổ biến nhất. Trong các
ví dụ dưới đây, các noun phrase đều có thể được thay thế bởi một danh từ, đó chính là lý do giải
thích cái tên “noun phrase”
‘where’ clause
The powerehouse is where the electricity is generated.
The powerhouse is the place where the electricity is generated.
‘when’ clause
This is when the process comes to an end.
This is the moment when the process comes to an end.
The process requires the construction of a large dam connected to a powerhouse. (đầy đủ:
a large dam which is connected…)
…water trapped in the reservoir behind the dam is forced through an intake (đầy đủ: water
which is trapped…)
It then flows into a narrow chamber called a penstock… (đầy đủ: a narrow chamber which
is called…)
on/in which
‘on/in which’ là dạng mệnh đề tính ngữ rất hữu ích cho dạng bài diagrams để chỉ sự tương quan vị
trí giữa hai vật được miêu tả, mang nghĩa ‘trên đó/trong đó’
The diagram illustrates a natural process in which a volcanic island grows from beneath the
sea, explodes, and then eventually sinks to become an underwater reef. (Sơ đồ miêu tả quy
trình tự nhiên trong đó một đảo núi lửa hình thành từ dưới mặt biển, phun trào và cuối cùng
lại sụt xuống để tạo thành một rặng núi dưới mặt biển.)
In these regions, people employ a much simpler way to protect houses which is simply to
raise the height of the pillars on which houses stand.
11
Bạn cần dùng “which, when, where” để nối dài và tăng nội dung thông tin cho câu.
“which, when, where” rất dễ sử dụng vì cách dùng cũng như nghĩa của chúng giống hệt tiếng Việt
(“cái mà…, nơi…, khi….”). Chúng ta hãy xem những ví dụ sau:
The process involves a structure which is mounted on the side of a cliff or sea wall. (Quy
trình bao gồm một cấu trúc được dựng trên vách đá hoặc đê biển)
In these regions, people employ a much simpler way to protect houses, which is to raise the
height of the pillars on which houses stand. (Ở những nơi này, người ta dùng một phương
thức đơn giản hơn để bảo vệ nhà cửa, phương thức tăng chiều cao cột nhà).
Lưu ý: trong ví dụ trên, trước “which” có dấu phẩy để tránh gây nhầm lẫn. Nếu không có
dấu phẩy, người đọc có thể nhầm lẫn rằng “which” thay cho “houses”; dấu phẩy sẽ giúp tạo
ngăn cách để người đọc có thể hiểu rằng “which” thay cho “a much simpler way”
The life cycle of the honey bee begins when the female adult lays an egg. (Vòng đời của

The diagram shows the life cycle of the honey bee. Two things to consider are:
1. how to summarise the diagram before describing the stages in detail
2. whether to use active or passive verb forms
...
...
nymph = immature form of an insect
moult = shed or lose old feathers, hair or skin to allow for new growth
The diagram illustrates the various stages in the life of a honey bee. We can see that the complete
life cycle lasts between 34 and 36 days. It is also noticeable that there are five main stages in the
development of the honey bee, from egg to mature adult insect.
The life cycle of the honey bee begins when the female adult lays an egg; the female typically lays
one or two eggs every 3 days. Between 9 and 10 days later, each egg hatches and the immature
insect, or nymph, appears.
During the third stage of the life cycle, the nymph grows in size and sheds its skin three times.
This process of moulting first takes place 5 days after the egg hatches, then 7 days later, and
again another 9 days later. After a total of 30 to 31 days from the start of the cycle, the young adult
honey bee emerges from its final moulting stage, and in the space of only 4 days it reaches full
maturity.
(171 words, band 9)

Vocabulary and Grammar
mature (adj) | maturity (n): trưởng thành
từ ngược nghĩa: immature (adj)
to last (v)
kéo dài trong bao lâu
The drought asted for several months.(Trận hạn hán kéo dài trong nhiều tháng)
He's working very efficiently at the moment, but it won't last. (Hiện tại thì anh ta làm việc rất hiệu
quả, nhưng chuyện đó sẽ không bền đâu.)
…there are five main stages in the development of the honey bee
…có năm giai đoạn chính trong quá trình phát triển của ong mật | lưu ý: hãy học thuộc cấu trúc “there
is/are….” vì đây là cấu trúc rất phổ biến trong tiếng Anh
the start/end of the cycle: kết thúc một chu trình khép kín
…it reaches full maturity: đến giai đoạn trưởng thành đầy đủ
Pronunciation

The diagram below shows how solar panels can be used to provide electricity for domestic
use.
The picture illustrates the process of producing electricity in a home using solar panels.
It is clear that there are five distinct stages in this process, beginning with the capture of energy
from sunlight. The final two steps show how domestic electricity is connected to the external power
supply.
At the first stage in the process, solar panels on the roof of a normal house take energy from the
sun and convert it into DC current. Next, this current is passed to an inverter, which changes it to
AC current and regulates the supply of electricity. At stage three, electricity is supplied to the home
from an electrical panel.
At the fourth step shown on the diagram, a utility meter in the home is responsible for sending any
extra electric power outside the house into the grid. Finally, if the solar panels do not provide
enough energy for the household, electricity will flow from the utility grid into the home through the
meter.
16
Vocabulary and Grammar
stage | …there are five distinct stages in this process: có năm giai đoạn khác nhau trong quy trình này
Mệnh đề tính ngữ rút gọn | …there are five distinct stages in this process, beginning with the capture of
energy from sunlight = ……there are five distinct stages in this process, which begin with the capture of
energy from sunlight
Grammar: câu nay sử dụng mệnh đề tính ngữ rút gọn, động từ trong mệnh đề tính ngữ được cần giữ ở
dạng thứ v-ing (chủ động) hoặc past participle (bị động)
how + to do & ‘how’ clause | The two final steps show how domestic electricity is connected to the
external power supply: hai bước cuối cùng cho thấy cách điện sử dụng trong gia đình được kết nối với
nguồn điện từ bên ngoài
Grammar: how + clause là một mệnh đề đặc biệt, có chức năng giống hệt như danh từ, có thể đứng sau
động từ với chức năng tân ngữ; chúng ta hãy xem hai ví dụ sau:
The two final steps show how domestic electricity is connected to the external power supply. (verb +
“how” clause)
The two final steps show the way domestic electricity is connected to the external power supply.
(verb + noun)
convert | to convert energy from the sun into DC current: chuyển năng lượng mặt trời sang dòng điện
Grammar: convert sth into sth
current | AC DC
…this current is passed to an inverter, which changes it to AC current and regulates the supply of
electricity: dòng điện này được truyền vào bộ đổi điện, bộ đổi điện giúp biến đổi dòng điện này thành dòng
xoay chiều và điều khiển dòng cung cấp điện
current: dòng điện | DC (direct current): dòng điện một chiều | AC (alternating current): dòng điện xoay
chiều
to supply sth to sth/sb | electricity is supplied to the home: điện năng được cung cấp cho hộ gia đình
Grammar: Passives

Vocabulary and Grammar
a hydroelectric dam: đập thủy điện
to require sth | The process requires the construction of a large dam connected to a powerhouse. (Quy
trình đòi hỏi việc xây dựng một con đập lớn được kết nối với nhà máy điện.)
noun phrase – ‘where’ clause | the powerhouse is where the electricity is generated (nhà máy điện là nơi
điện được tạo ra).
Grammar: where + clause là một mệnh đề đặc biệt, có chức năng giống hệt như danh từ, có thể đứng sau
động từ với chức năng tân ngữ; chúng ta hãy xem hai ví dụ sau:
The powerehouse is where the electricity is generated.
The powerhouse is the place where the electricity is generated.
Động từ trong mệnh đề tính ngữ được cần giữ ở dạng thứ v-ing (chủ động) hoặc past participle (bị động).
Các ví dụ trên động từ đều là past participle, thể hiện dạng thức bị động.
resulting (adj)
Tính từ này thể hiện ý nghĩa một sự vật, hiện tượng sinh ra từ kết quả của một quy trình hoặc lý do đã trình
bày trước đó.
Water then flows into a narrow chamber called a penstock, where the resulting high pressure turns
a turbine. (Nước sẽ chảy vào buồng chứa nhỏ, được gọi là penstock, tạo nên áp suất cao để quay
tuốc bin.)
The turbine is connected to a generator in the powerhouse above, and this is where the movement
of the turbine is converted into electricity. The resulting electricity leaves the powerhouse via cables
that carry it over long distances to where it can be used. (Tuốc bin này kết nối với máy phát điện
trong nhà máy ở phía trên, và đây là nơi mà chuyển động của tuốc bin được chuyển thành điện
năng. Điện năng sinh ra này đi ra khỏi nhà máy thông qua cáp truyền tải điện, những sợi dây cáp
này sẽ đưa điện qua những khoảng cách dài, tới những nơi chúng được sử dụng).
over | giới từ over được dùng với khoảng cách về cả không gian và thời gian
over long distances
over the years
It is interesting to note that a hydroelectric dam creates no harmful byproducts and relies entirely on natural
forces to produce electricity. The process is renewable, thanks to the water cycle in nature.

Why does this Task 1 answer get an IELTS Band 8 score?
Task achievement: The introduction paraphrases the question and describes the constituent
parts of the process. The body describes each stage of the process in sequence.
Coherence and cohesion: The model answer has an introduction, body and conclusion.
Sequencing expressions such as first of all, then and after are used appropriately. The
articles a and the are used effectively to introduce and refer back to different elements of the
process.
Lexical resource: The labels in the diagram are well integrated into the model answer and
appropriate verbs such as converted, flows and leaves are used throughout. Less-common words
such as byproducts and renewable are introduced by the writer. Spelling is always accurate.
Grammatical range and accuracy: The writer uses the present simple tense and has good
control of subject-verb agreement and active/passive forms. A good balance of simple and
complex sentences is used throughout.
Teacher’s Notes
This IELTS Writing Task 1 question asks you to describe a process. Usually
the process diagram will include some technical vocabulary. The challenge
is how well you can integrate the vocabulary into a coherent report. The
examiner is also looking at how you use sequencing expressions to show
the order of events. Finally, remember that most processes happen at any
time, so use only the present simple tense.

Notes
Đây là một bài mẫu rất thông minh và quyết đoán khi đối mặt với ‘quá nhiều chi tiết’ trong hình
vẽ. Thay vì bị hình vẽ ‘dắt mũi,’ người viết chủ động nhìn vào hình và tự tìm ra điểm khác biệt. Khi
đó, người viết cũng cảm thấy dễ dàng hơn và không bị rối bởi quá nhiều giải thích trên sơ đồ.
Teacher’s Notes
You might panic when you see this IELTS Writing Task 1 diagram due to
the number of words. However, it isn’t necessary to describe every feature.
Instead, highlight only the most interesting points for comparison. In this
22
example, we would definitely want to mention the width of the body and the length of the legs. A
high-scoring answer will also include some kind of overview or general statement. In this case, the
physical differences between our ancestors are clearer connected to their different lifestyles, as
mentioned in the headings.

The illustration below shows the process of tying a bow tie.Write a report explaining
to a university lecturer how to tie his bow tie.
Write at least 150 words.
To begin with, the tie should be placed around the neck, with one end slightly longer than the
other. Then place the longer end over the other and pass it upwards and behind the point where
the two ends cross.
Next, take the other end of the tie and bend it twice to form an ‘S’ shape. Bring the longer end
down and in front, so that it holds the ‘S’ curve in place. Now comes the trickiest part of the
process. Take the long end of the tie and form a similar ‘S’ shape before passing it through the
narrow gap behind the other end. This creates a knot and the bow should now be held securely in
place.
Finally, adjust both sides of the bow to make it symmetrical and prepare to be the envy of your
friends.
24
Vocabulary and Grammar
knot a bow tie: thắt nơ
Đảo ngữ | Now comes the trickiest part of the process. = The trickiest part of the process comes
now. (Đảo ngữ giúp tăng sắc thái nhấn mạnh cho ý này.)
Make sb/stjh make sb/sth adj | to make it symmetrical: để cho nó cân đối
Notes
Đây là một bài khó vì những lý do sau:
Diagrams không có từ gợi ý, tất cả từ vựng được sử dụng phải nằm trong vốn từ của thí
sinh
Với nhiều người chưa từng thắt bow tie thì có thể sẽ chẳng hiểu gì, kể cả đọc bài mẫu
Coherence and cohesion: The model answer uses a range of sequencing expressions to
describe the order in which the actions should be carried out. The answer is divided into several
paragraphs for ease of understanding, with the inclusion of a general sentence – Now comes the
trickiest part of the process – to aid coherence.
Lexical resource: A range of appropriate vocabulary is introduced, including action verbs such
as knot, bend,pass and adjust.
Grammatical range and accuracy: The correct forms – imperatives, modals – are used to give
instructions. Sentence patterns vary and are always grammatically accurate.
Teacher’s Notes
As I mentioned in my introduction above, this IELTS Writing Task 1
question is not entirely serious. It would be quite shocking to have to
describe a process like this one in the real exam. It does illustrate a serious
25
point though. Almost every diagram in IELTS Writing Task 1 contains some vocabulary in the form
of labels. The vocabulary is there to help you, not to make the task more complex. So be grateful
for all those labels!

The diagram shows the growth cycle of a volcanic island. Write a 150-word report
for a university lecturer describing the main features of the cycle.
The diagram illustrates a natural process in which a volcanic island grows from beneath the sea,
explodes, and then eventually sinks to become an underwater reef. The process is divided into
nine stages.
In the first two stages, called the ‘preshield’ and ‘protoshield’ stages, a mountain gradually builds
under the surface of the sea. In the third or ‘explosive’ phase, hydro-explosions occur which
deposit a cone of ash. A large number of cinder cones then pile up to form a ‘shield’ on top of the
volcano.
This shield gradually erodes and subsides to form reefs below the surface of the sea. However,
there may be ongoing volcanic activity including lava flows. By the time of the ‘coral atoll’ stage,
the original form of the volcano has disappeared, and the whole structure sinks further under the
sea during the ‘guyot’ stage.
In summary, huge volcanoes rise and fall under the sea in a natural process known as the
volcanic island growth cycle.
The diagram illustrates a natural process in which a volcanic island grows from beneath the sea,
explodes, and then eventually sinks to become an underwater reef. (Sơ đồ miêu tả quy trình tự
nhiên trong đó một đảo núi lửa hình thành từ dưới mặt biển, phun trào và cuối cùng lại sụt xuống
để tạo thành một rặng núi dưới mặt biển.)
Coherence and cohesion: The body of the report groups the natural process into two paragraphs
rather than attempt to describe each of the nine stages separately. Events are clearly sequenced
and summarised.
Lexical resource: The candidate uses vocabulary from the diagram but transforms it where
necessary to fit a sentence: erosion > erodes; subsidence > subsides. The model answer also
introduces other relevant vocabulary not in the diagram such as deposits, surface and structure.
Grammatical range and accuracy: The candidate writes in complex sentences using
conjunctions and relative pronouns. Most of the sentences have multiple clauses. There are no
grammatical mistakes. In addition to the present simple tense, the present perfect tense is used to
show how events are related in time: the original form of the volcano has disappeared.
28
Teacher’s Notes
This natural process diagram includes nine stages, which are difficult to
describe in detail in so few words. Therefore, you should take this
opportunity to practice grouping stages together and summarising where
possible. It’s not a good idea to write nine sentences to describe each of the
nine stages. You will simply not have the time. Writing skills like grouping
and summarising will come in very handy in the real test.

…by + doing sth: ‘by’ là từ nối rất hữu ích mang nghĩa ‘thông qua, bằng việc làm gì’
make noun 1 + noun 2
31
Why does this Task 1 answer get an IELTS Band 9 score?
Task achievement: The candidate writes at least 150 words and describes all of the proposed
changes. The changes are summarised at the beginning and end, and described in detail in the
body of the report. The changes are connected to their function and their location on the map is
also clearly described.
Coherence and cohesion: The body of the report is divided into two paragraphs, one describing
the changes that will improve safety, and another describing changes that will improve the
environment. These paragraphs are clearly linked (“In addition to the safety measures above,…”).
There are several uses of reference links such asthis and these to refer back to a previous
sentence.
Lexical resource: The candidate introduces relevant vocabulary not on the original maps such as
pedestrian, cyclist, measures, and tree-lined. The candidate transforms certain words as
in proposed > proposal andinstallation > installed. There are no spelling mistakes.
Grammatical range and accuracy: The model answer includes a range of complex sentence
structures. Tense is always used correctly to show that the changes will occur in the future. There
are no grammatical errors.
Teacher’s Notes
When describing changes to a map in IELTS Writing Task 1, you will
usually start by comparing the diagrams, identify four or five changes that
seem important, and write about these. But it’s worth taking 1-2 minutes
first to reflect on why the changes are significant and if there is a common
theme or themes. Being able to identify a common theme or tendency is
one way to get a high score for Task Achievement.

IELTS Writing Task 1: Question
The diagram below illustrates the carbon cycle in nature.
Write a 150-word description of this diagram for a university lecturer.
The diagram shows how carbon moves through various stages to form a complete cycle. This
report will give a brief description of the main stages in this cycle.
First, we can see that energy from the sun is transformed into organic carbon through a process in
plants known as photosynthesis. This organic carbon is then transferred underground when
plants, and the animals that feed on them, die and decay. Some of this carbon is trapped
underground in the form of fossils and fossil fuels.
Carbon is also released back into the atmosphere, however, through various means. One is when
animals and plants respire, and another is when humans burn fossil fuels in cars and factories. All
this carbon enters the atmosphere as CO2. It is then reabsorbed by plants, and the cycle begins
again.
Overall, we can see that carbon moves in a natural cycle, although human factors may now be
affecting the balance.
to form a complete cycle: tạo ra một vòng tuần hoàn khép kín
energy from the sun = solar energy: năng lượng mặt trời
to transform sth into sth | sth be transformed into sth: biến đổi cái gì thành cái gì (thường là
theo hướng tốt lên)
a process in plants known as photosynthesis: một quy trình trong thực vật, cây cỏ được biết
đến với tên gọi ‘quang hợp’
Grammar: mệnh đề tính ngữ rút gọn ‘a process in plants which is known as…’
release sth | sth be released: phát tán cái gì | cái gì được phát tán
Carbon is also released back into the atmosphere (Các bon được phát tán ra khí quyển)
through various means: thông qua nhiều phương tiện khác nhau
sth enter the atmosphere: cái gì xâm nhập vào khí quyển
Coherence and cohesion: The model answer is divided into clear paragraphs with a logical
separation between the body paragraphs and connective markers first, then, however, and overall.
There is a general overview in paragraph 1 and a summary in paragraph 4. Referencing
techniques such as ellipsis (one is…) are used to avoid over-repetition of key words.
Lexical resource: The writer makes good use of the language in the cycle diagram and is also
able to change forms in the case of respiration > respire. The writer also introduces a range of
verbs for describing a process or cycle such as transform, transfer and release.
Grammatical range and accuracy: The model answer uses a wide range of forms accurately
including countable/uncountable nouns, active/passive structures, and transitive/intransitive verbs.
Teacher’s Notes
Cycle diagrams are almost always natural processes: nature is one big
wheel after all. Usually you will find that the labels on the diagram contains
lots of unfamiliar scientific nouns. If you think you know the verb forms, then
use them as this will definitely contribute to a higher score. Otherwise you’ll
have to rely on phrases such as “in a process known as Animal
Respiration”.
