ENG 110
Group Discussion
Reflection Paper
4/12/2019

Our group led class discussion was, in my mind, a success. I think we did a good job of

asking analytical questions that led the class to think about the topic at hand, namely revision in

writing. This topic provided some unique challenges. One of these is that most of the class

already agreed that revision is important. Having the entire class agree might seem like a dream

come true, but it also makes discussion sparser due to the lack of disagreement. Also, many

people in the class, though they believed revision to be important, did not practice it thoroughly

in their own writing, usually preferring a spelling and grammar check to deep revision.

Hopefully we encouraged the class to begin to spend more time on revision. I believe one of our

triumphs to this regard was discussing advice that people had for effective revision. There were

some really helpful tips that even our group did not think about, such as reading aloud or

changing the font in order to see the paper in a fresh way.

One of the things that we did not do as well at was responding to the ideas that the class

produced. Many times we would listen to what they said and say it was good and then move on

to the next group. It would have been better if we could have asked follow up questions and had

more back and forth discussion. Another thing we could’ve changed is the freewrite. I really

liked the idea, but most people just fixed spelling and grammar errors instead of more major

revisions due to the time constraint. One thing I would change is that we should have told them

to leave spaces between lines so they had more room to revise their writing and add more if they

wanted. We also could have split the time evenly and given them the same amount to write and

to revise. But I thought that overall, the activity was very beneficial. I think that everybody in my

group did a really good job and our group discussion went very well.
