Judging by eye were moved to bring the tripod head over the point, the tripod was keeping head as level as possible. Mounting the instrument The level was carefully removed from the box and screwed to the tripod. Levelling Levelling was accomplished by raising or lowering the legs of tripod, the sliding led arrangement was used and the circular spirit level was centred. Refinements to the centring and levelling of the instrument must be made: a) The plate spirit level was set over two screws and the bubble was centralized. b) The instrument was turned through 90 ̊ and the bubble was recentralized. c) Operation (a) and (b) was repeated until the bubble remains central for both positions. Parallax elimination A piece of paper was held in front of the telescope and sighting the paper through the telescope had been observed, the eyepiece was turned carefully until the cross-wires of the reticule were sharply defined.
