Procedure

1. The level was setting up


 Setting the tripod
The tripod legs were spread out and rested lightly on the ground around the
survey point. Judging by eye were moved to bring the tripod head over the
point, the tripod was keeping head as level as possible.
 Mounting the instrument
The level was carefully removed from the box and screwed to the tripod.
 Levelling
Levelling was accomplished by raising or lowering the legs of tripod, the
sliding led arrangement was used and the circular spirit level was centred.
Refinements to the centring and levelling of the instrument must be made:
a) The plate spirit level was set over two screws and the bubble was
centralized.
b) The instrument was turned through 90 ̊ and the bubble was recentralized.
c) Operation (a) and (b) was repeated until the bubble remains central for
both positions.
 Parallax elimination
A piece of paper was held in front of the telescope and sighting the paper
through the telescope had been observed, the eyepiece was turned carefully
until the cross-wires of the reticule were sharply defined.

2. Staff reading was obtained


 Released horizontal plate.
 The level horizontally rotated , the staff was collimated.
