LESSON PLAN – Lesson 1 (January 17, 2019)

Title: Emotive Monster Sketches

Grade Level: 2
Date Taught: January 17, 2019

Aim/Goal of the Lesson/Unit:


 What is the purpose of the lesson/unit?
o Learn how emotion can be expressed physically through facial expression and form
o Develop preliminary sketches to be used in the following lesson as part of the artistic process

 VA:Cr1.1.2a – Brainstorm collaboratively multiple approaches to an art or design problem
 VA:Re.7.2.2a – Categorize images based on expressive properties
 Va:Re8.1.2a – Interpret art by identifying the mood suggested by a work of art and describing relevant
subject matter and characteristics of form
Objectives: Students will…

o Make a minimum of 4 thumbnail sketches of 4 different monsters
o Draw how emotion is visible through facial expressions

Vocabulary/language:
 Thumbnail sketch: A small drawing on paper (usually part of a group) used to explore multiple ideas
quickly
 Emotion: A natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationships
with others; i.e. feelings
 Expression: A look on someone’s face that conveys a particular emotion
Describe how students will learn and use this vocabulary through discussion, production, critique, etc.

Students will learn this vocabulary after discussing and reading, The Way I Feel, as well as when
instructions are given. Students will see a visual example of a thumbnail sketch through the teacher
demonstration.

Title: Emotive Monster Sketches

Procedures:
 DISCUSSION: (10 minutes)
o Introduce clay monster project
o In preparation for our clay monster project, we are exploring different ideas we may have as
artists
o Read The Way I Feel by Janan Cain
o Learn vocabulary words
o On the SMART board, brainstorm a list of different emotions with students
 Ask students what emotions they can think of
 What are some emotions/feelings that you feel?
 What does your face look like when you feel _______?
 Encourage students to think of emotions that are more descriptive than happy, sad,
angry, etc.
o The goal for today is to make 4 thumbnail sketches with 4 different emotions for your clay
monster
 When you are drawing your monsters, think about what physical characteristics show
different emotions
 Think about the texture of the skin, the number of eyes, teeth, color, etc.
 DEMONSTRATIONS: (5 minutes)
o Explain that students will get their sketchbooks and turn to a new page
o I will divide the page into four different sections
 Draw a line in the middle of the page from top to bottom
 Draw a line in the middle of the page from side to side
o I will label a different emotion in each section
 Ask students to choose emotions they might want to show for their monster project
o I will draw an example of a very simple representation of an emotion
 Example: Draw a small smiley face to represent “happy”
 Ask students to think about how to show an emotion with more than just a simple face
o I will draw an example of a more detailed representation of an emotion
 Example: Draw an angry monster with horns, scales, claws, and red eyes
 DESIGN/WORK SESSION: (20 minutes)
o Start your sketches by drawing in pencil. Then, you may use the crayons and colored pencils to
add color to your sketches if time allows
o Students may discuss with their peers about different ideas they may have
o Encourage students to draw big and fill each section
o Teacher will walk around to answer any questions
o Teacher will ask guiding questions to help students to think further about their design choices
o The teacher will give a 5 minute warning for the end of the work session
o The teacher will give a 1 minute warning for the end of the work session
 CLEAN UP: (4 minutes)
o Put pencils, colored pencils, and crayons back where you found them
o Close your sketchbooks and put them in one stack at your table
o I will ask one student to pick up all of the sketchbooks
 CLOSURE: (1 minute)
o At this point, you should have completed at least 3 of your sketches. Next time we have class,
we will be experimenting with clay.

Students will be assessed using the following criteria. Students must fulfill these requirements in order to
receive the full points for the activity.
