Materials: The book Cinco De Mayo by Emma Carlson Berne with the CD, a CD player to play the
song, and red, white, and green construction paper, glue, wooden sticks to make Mexican flags.
Standard: History Standard: SS.2.15. Discuss the contributions and positive impacts of culturally,
racially, and ethnically diverse people in U.S. history.
Objective: Students will be able to describe history, traditions, and recite song with 90% accuracy
as a whole group. Student will also be able to answer the five questions with 95% accuracy and
understand the general history behind Cinco De Mayo. Goal for the lesson is to teach and show kids that
embracing other cultures will show us the positive contributions we each make to society.
Procedure: Introduce: Show the Cinco De Mayo book and say, “Today we are going to learn
about an important day in Mexican history. Can anyone guess what Cinco De Mayo means? Well today
we are going to learn about all the amazing traditions Mexicans have during this day, we are also going to

Activities:
Working together students will recreate a Mexican flag with construction paper and glue.
Student will also be able to further discuss different types of traditions done on Cinco De Mayo.
Something like the Mexican Hat Dance, the foods one may eat, or even sing the song we
learned.
Evaluation: Teacher will as student what their favorite Mexican Tradition on Cinco De Mayo is
