He identifies ten roles in an administrator's work, which he groups in three domains. With reference to this classifcstion, a school principal functions a) as symbolic head ofthe schoo! (figurehead). as leader ofthe school personnel and as ison with those outside the school: b) as monitor and information collector. as information dlisseminator and as spokesperson to the outsiders; and c) as innovator and reformer (enterpreneur), as disturbance handler, as resource allocator and as negotiator, The research ‘on schoo! effectiveness originated in the United States and has come as a reaction to the dispute, in the 1960's, of schools contribution in combating social inequality in the USA. From the relative studies the crucial role of the school principal has been hihlightedand some basic features of the effective school principal have been identified. Among those are ‘neluded: i) the development and promotion of a common vision forthe school and of a sense ‘of common mission forthe school staff ithe focus of his/her interest and efforts on teaching, nd educating pupils {i} the recognition of the importance and the emphasis on the impact ‘that the human factor has on the educational process iv) the ensuring of the practical conditions for supporting teaching and learning and v) the continuous effort for change and ‘improvement of the school.
