Jaffna Muslim Association UK

2019
Who are we?

Jaffna Muslim Association UK is a non-profit charity organisation that was originally

created in 2002 to help the community that was forcibly expelled from the town of
Jaffna in 1990 during the Sri Lankan Civil war.

Our organisation, which became an official registered charity in 2011, now offers help
to all people in Sri Lanka. It has a main focus on providing support for widows and
orphans, education for children, medical assistance, funding building projects and
improving people's standard of living. We also run emergency appeals for people
affected by natural disasters or sudden calamities.

Majority of the donations are collected in the UK and we advertise our projects on our
Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/JaffnaMuslimAssociationUK/

Assisting Muslims in the Northern Province
Women

During the Sri Lankan civil war, women's lives were uprooted by displacement
and they became incredibly vulnerable. Several women are now the heads of
household due to their husbands being unemployed whilst also having to care
for several children. The way that we can improve the livelihoods of women is
by providing them with education, safeguarding knowledge and a means of
self-sustainability - e.g. providing sewing machines so that they can earn a
living.

Children

JMA would like to give children the best start in life by providing them with
facilities that they are lacking in school and at home. These children are
unable to reach their potential due to financial difficulty and unsettled home
environments.

We believe that children in Jaffna would benefit from good school resources,
school amenities, tuition classes, financial aid for struggling pupils and
financial support for orphans.

Medical support and care for elderly

JMA regularly receives a multitude of letters

requesting for funding to get medical help. All
of these letters come with proof from doctors
and masjids that verify the need for the items
or the condition of the person requesting for
assistance. Previously, we have donated
several wheelchairs to hospitals in Sri Lanka
and provided help for people with a variety of
illnesses. As this is one of the main areas
that we get request letters from, funding in
this area is essential.
Islamic services

During Ramadan, JMA gets a lot of

requests for providing suhur and iftar
programmes in various Sri Lankan
masjids. Our biggest Ramadan project is
our Fitra collection where we have been
able to reach over 750 families with the
funding we have received. Fitra bags
contain rice. Our fitra packages are
delivered to people across the Northern
Province but also other areas in Sri
Lanka.

Usually, the areas that the packages are

distributed in are: Jaffna, Mankumpan,
Thilaiyadi, Nainathivu, Puttalam,
Rathmalayaya, Malwana, Alankuda,
Palavi, Hajarawatte (Nurachcholai),
Mullaithivu, Kilinochchi, Nachchikuda,
Vavuniya, Mullai Nahar, Solden Muham,
Sadamiyapuram, Umarabath, Negombo,
Panadura etc.

The people that receive the Fitra parcels

are from the aforementioned vulnerable
backgrounds. The same applies to our
Qurbani service and recipients of Zakat
and Sadaqah money. We also help with
covering the costs of Janazah services.

Water aid

One of JMA's biggest on-going projects

is our water aid project. We have
provided water pumps, wells and
bathroom facilities for several
communities across the Northern
Province but also other areas such as
Trincomalee. These facilities often
benefit large families, masjids, schools
and women. This is a very important
service to provide as having clean and
easily accessible facilities is essential
for basic community services to run
properly.
