Pullers are tools used to remove pieces that were press-fitted when
assembled. Vises and c-clamps allow the user to fasten two or more
items to work on them. For example, machinery, internal combustion
engines, transmissions, and at the woodworking, heavy, and oil industries.
The majority of these tools have a threaded shaft; and straight, internal
and external, fixed, adjustable and reversible jaws, forged for greater
resistance.
Pullers, vises and c-clamps are particularly useful in applications where

the pieces are press-fitted or if their operation requires pulleys, bearings,
or bushings. They are also useful with power transmission devices like
automobile engines, internal machinery parts, structures, industrial
installations, and similar applications. This makes URREA pullers, vises
and c-clamps indispensable tools in industry and for automotive servicing.
There are also specialized pullers mainly for automotive servicing, to

install or remove pulleys, gears, pitman arms from vehicle steering,
bearings, and bushings, among others.
The pullers, vises, and c-clamps presented in this chapter are classified
as extraction and fastening tools because they are designed to extract
and fasten pieces that by design were required to be press-fitted. Made
of different materials and available in different sizes, there are jaw pullers,
pulley pullers, steering wheel pullers, adjustable pullers, reversible
pullers, gear and bearing separators, workbench vises, c-clamps, and

Once the extraction problem has been identified you can select the puller that will meet those needs. For best results and greater safety, it is especially
important to use the appropriate tool to tackle the problem. To select the appropriate extraction tool you need to:
1. Select the extraction tool or required combination.
2. Determine the required reach (A).
- The selected puller must have a reach equal to or greater than what you estimate necessary for removal of the item.
3. Determine the spread (B) the item will require.
- The item's width will determine the spread required.
4. Consider the jaw's thickness (C) and width (D).
5. Estimate the force required. A puller with the right reach and spread has to be strong enough for the job. However, it is always recommended to use a
puller with a spread and reach greater than those of the item that will be removed, especially when the part is rough or when the "resistance area" is big,
since greater force might be required.
Manual extraction tools require that the puller's screw moves smoothly and that the item's reach and spread are known. These measurements have to be
compared with those specified for each URREA puller presented in this chapter.

STRAIGHT JAW PULLER

CHARACTERISTICS
These pullers are commonly used for automotive repairs and for performing
machinery maintenance. They can be extended using the holes and slots on each
jaw.
Straight jaw pullers are more versatile because it is possible to combine different types of jaws on the puller's head. The following table shows the variety of
URREA pullers, a small description of each part, and their respective codes and available components.
FORCING SCREW: Threaded shaft with floating tip. This screw

exerts the extraction force.
HEAD: Puller's body onto which the jaws and forcing screw are
mounted.
CLIP: Die-cut and hardened metal clips hold the jaws to the puller's
body.
SHORT JAW: For general purpose applications with no space,

maneuverability or reach restrictions.
DOUBLE REACH JAWS: For deep applications, when the shaft of

the piece being removed is long.
NARROW JAW: the jaw's toe is narrower, allowing an excellent

grip in confined areas.
SCREW HEAD JAW: The jaw's tip is slotted so screws can be

fastened by the head and pulled.

It is important to select the tool that will fasten as strongly as possible to the piece being pulled. The decision between a puller with
two or three jaws depends on the piece that will be removed and its location. However, whenever space allows it we recommend
