3 REASONS TO USE STAINLESS STEEL

Stainless steel is widely used in manufacturing industry especially in producing automotive

parts such as an exhaust and etc. Stainless steel was created through a variety of process and
it contains mostly chromium and nickel, with small quantities of other elements such as
carbon, manganese and molybdenum. The methods by which stainless steel is produced will
ultimately affect its quality and mechanical properties. The steel can either be manufactured
as sheets or as a coil, where it is then to be flattened to a chosen thickness, either when it is
still hot or once it has cooled. Stainless steel can also be hot dip galvanized, which is often
the preferred production method when you want metal that can be used for interior and
exterior applications where extra corrosion protection is beneficial. Stainless steel is one of
the most common and important materials in the industries due to several reasons.

1. Strength
The cold work hardening properties of many stainless steels can be used in design to
reduce material thicknesses and reduce weight and costs. Other stainless steels may be
heat treated to make very high strength components.

2. Cost- effective
From cookware and daily-use utensils to motorcycle frames and auto-mobile parts,
stainless steel finds application in a variety of industrial projects. The cost
effectiveness of the metal that makes it the best option for innumerable projects.
Stainless steel can reduce it cost because it is long lasting steel without the need for
further protection.

3. Recyclability
Choosing stainless steel can prove to be beneficial in ways more than one. Whenever
there are too many projects or bulk requirements, you can recycle scrapped stainless
steel and produce more of it. Most importantly, the recycling process will in no way
affect the original quality of the metal. And your stainless-steel sheets or bars will
retain their intrinsic properties. Apart from that, this particular industrial construction
material has exceptional magnetic properties. It’s easily recoverable from unsorted
wastes and you can recycle it at minimum costs.
DISCUSSION
In November, we had done our site visit which was assigned by our lecturer,
Madam Izdihar Tharani. Zamria Sdn Bhd located at Port Klang was been selected.
Basically, Zamria Sdn Bhd factory were specialize in Manufacturing of Quality
Precision Metal Stamping Components, Tool & Die Design Fabrication and Heat
Treatment of Production Parts and Tooling. The objectives of the visits were able to
be achieved where we as a student had known the current manufacturing processes
and practices in manufacturing product. For example, bracket accumulator, Retainer
Accumulator and Oil plug that were requested by Panasonic Compressor Sdn Bhd
have go through stamping and bending processes. The stamping processes is the
process of placing flat sheet metal in either blank or coil form into a stamping press
where a tool and die surface form the metal into a net shape. In there, the die of the
stamping processes was been made by their own engineer whereas the design and die
making was been design and research by their own. From there, we have learned how
the stamping process occurs and also, we get to see the example of die that the
company have been designed. Other than that, the theories and knowledge that we
gained from lecture room teaching can be related to what we have seen and learned
from the site visits. As an example, in lecture room, we have been teaching about
bending, welding and stamping processes but that only by theoretical which means we
still cannot be imagined on how the processes occur and what will happen when there
are errors occur during the processes. By this visit, we can see it clearly and
understand it without doubt when the manufacturing processes takes places. The
company itself have been through R&D from their research department which their
make to make an improvement of their company and friendlier to the customers.
The company were prioritized in safety which they make an innovation on
their machines. For examples, the pressing machine that already have were not safe.
Hence, they put a sensor on the machine. The sensor functioning by any objects
passing through the sensor, the machine will immediately stop. This innovation is
very good because the one press has ton of power which mean your hand will be
shattered. Other than that, they want to reduce the man power by made a robotic arm
to replace man’s hand. By doing that it also can save the costs of the company to hire
workers.
Next, there are some issues in steel industry which lead to broken or damaged of
the steel itself.
1. In general, steel industry produces large amounts of solid wastes while processing
materials through its various processes. These solid wastes have many valuable
products which it can be recycle back. Solid wastes generated in steel industries is
thus coke oven by product plant, sinter plant, refractory materials plant, blast
furnace, basic oxygen furnace and steel melting shop.
2. Next is human resources. Availability of efficient manpower has been listed as the
biggest hurdle in the development of steel industry. Attracting and retaining the
best engineers is a challenge task as employees find service sector a more
lucrative opportunity for professional growth.
3. In the innovation of the technology, the eco-friendly technologies need to be
introduced in order to have the longer period of the production efficiency.
