 It all started in 1792.
G
eorge Washington was president,
and editor Robert B. Thomas
published the first issue of The
Farmer’s Almanac.
More of a pamphlet, the almanac pre-
dicted astronomical events,
weather, tides and more.
It wasn’t the only source of
information for farmers in
the late 1700s, but Thomas’
formula produced a more
accurate forecast than his
competitors. According to
modern almanac staff, that
formula is locked away in
a black tin in Dublin, New
Hampshire.
Later renamed The Old
Farmer’s Almanac, the annual infor-
mation helped farmers predict natural
phenomena so they could improve their
crops each year. He helped a young
country bolster its economy, providing
Americans with information that they
learned to trust.
While we don’t have an extensive
formula to help modern farmers, the
Shelton-Mason County Journal’s annual
Profile issue does include facts, figures
and information that we think residents
will find fascinating.
