CAN EQUALITY EVER BE UNFAIR

When we hear the word equality, what comes first to mind? Fairness. Usually, when we talk about equality, people
always thought that it is all about being fair and just. But, is giving the same kind of treatment and the same
amount of things really just? Does equality always stand with fairness?

Take for example a guy not giving up his seat to a woman, isn’t he judged as a bad person for not letting her sit?
Yet, we aspire for gender equality? Is it fair for a factory worker with minimum wage to have the same income tax
as an employer who earns 21,000Php per cut off?

When we say equal, it does not have to mean the same. A man and a woman is not born biologically in likeness,
yet both are entitled on their rights to have a comfortable seat at a public bus or train, and the opportunities for
a better life.

Distinguishing these two terms apart will set clear their differences and lift clouds off on vague ideas. It is
important to remember that equality and fairness can never coexist in reality because in the real world no two
individuals are alike, it is a matter of how we approach our differences. True equality is unattainable, what people
should aspire is not for everyone to be on the same level but to be able to put effort and work on to achieve the
same things.

Race, gender, and age should not be the basis for how a person should be treated, that is not giving the same
equal opportunities to everyone rather that is being racists, sexists, or just downright cruel individuals. Is it not?

If you assess a fish’s success by its ability to climb a tree, would it be fair? No way! As Albert Einstein said,
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it
is stupid.”
