Madre Karnaraj University ison ts relentless journey forthe past 53
years surmounting hurdles of indigenous and exotic nature on its way and
has passed through the tests of accreditation towards reaching the status
of excollence, Established in 1965, Madurai Kamar University as 2 State
University attained the statu of University with Ptental for Excelence for
"Teaching, Reseach and Outeach’ in 2007, sanetioned grant of Ris 28.65
crores by UGC - Naw Delhi. The University is governed by Acts, Statutes,
Ordinances and Regulations. The Unversity has been accredited with “A”
rade in the 3rd cycle (2014) by NAAC. In 2017 Golden Jubilee
Convocation, 809 Ph. Scholors were awarded doctoral degrees, Inthe
"SWACHHTA PAKHWADA’ Ranking of High Educational Institutonsin the
Country, the HRD Ministry awarded Second Rank to the University inthe
category of Goverment Institutions on 14th September 2017. The
University isin its unting journey in seerch of knowiedge cretion and
¢isseminaton that resulted in recognition by its fecuty members which
include 4 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awards, 8 FNAs, BFNAScs, 11 FAScs,
‘TWAS, a Senor Spallarzan Fellow and 16 Tami Nadu Scientist Award.
Fourteen faculty ofthe Unversity have been elevated as Vice-Chancolrs
of various state and central Universities. Several Alumni are AS/IPS/RS
officers, The University with 20 Schools comprising 77 Departments offers.
43 Post Graduate, 39 M.Phi., 81 Ph.D. programmes and 16 ipiomay PG,
Aiploma/ certificate courses. Currently, a total of 2848 PG students and
research scholars are on te rl. All the courses in the University folow
Coie Based Creit System and theres an inbult provision fr lateral and
Vortial mobility. Twelve schools are recognized under UGC with Special
Assistance Programmes (SAP) such as CAS, DSA and ORS at various
phases. Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi has
sanctioned Rs. 8 Crore inthe first phase under PURSE programme that
supported saven science Schools. othe second phase, Rs. 7.5 Crore have
been sanctioned forthe period 2017-2021 Schools of Biological Sciences
(SBS), Biotecnology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics are supported
with DST-FIST programme, The finding agencies suchas UGC, CSIR, DST,
DBT, DAE-BRNS, MoEF MoES, ICMR, ICSSR, DRDO, ICAR, MHRD et.
funded the research schemes in various departments. The University has a
‘modemized central Libary with 3 lls books, 15,000 ejourals, 3,000
books, 85,000 reference and textbooks. The ane Gbps internet cnnectio,
INFONET centre with $0 nodes and smart class rooms have enriched the
ICT enabled teaching and learning, As 8 visionary step, academic and
administrative autonomy has been granted to select Schools. The
University has established linkages with community around through its
various outreach activities. The National and Intemational. level
connectivity and visibility ofthis Uiversity is pointer thatthe University
‘moving from the status of University with Potential for Excllnce tothe
status of University of Excelence.

‘The School of Chemistry (SOC), Madura Kamaraj University (MKU}
has its unique origin inthe eat 60's as a postgraduate extension centre of
the Department of Chemisty, University of Madras at Madura, in 1958.The
Department of Chemistry as bloomed ito ful-ledged School of Chemistry
and it comprises five departments. - Inorganic Chemisty, Organic
