Descriptive Writing

PLAN different stages and paragraphs of the piece very carefully.

SETTING – surroundings, atmosphere, time / season, weather etc. Use time or


distance as a framework for composition.

POSITIONING – establish the observer’s starting point – location, tense.

AVOID CLICHÉ – no well worn phrases or words. Use precision and your own voice.

APPROACHING – move towards the object / place. Alternatively, time is moving on.

ARRIVING – in the heart of the scene. Use a variety of senses and precise, minute
detail.

FAREWELL – the observer leaves the scene or the scene empties / time is used as a
closure.
